Visits present dean finalists to University

The University has selected the final three candidates for the permanent Dean of Students position, each of whom will make a presentation and answer questions in sessions open to the University community in the upcoming weeks.

A search committee comprised of faculty members and students formed in mid-January to examine applicants, said Christina Morell, assistant vice president for student affairs. After a thorough review of their qualifications and experience, the committee narrowed the field to Beth Hellwig, dean of student services at Gonzaga University; Phillip S. Riordan, associate vice president for student affairs at Millersville University; and Allen Groves, the University's current interim dean of students.

The committee has invited the remaining three candidates to Grounds so each will have a chance to meet and interact with various members of the University community, including students, Morell said.

The Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer has encouraged student participation in the selection process through the upcoming visits, Student Council President Matt Schrimper said.

"The vice president for student affairs office does want to hear our opinions and will make the candidates accessible," Schrimper said.

Students are encouraged to attend the open sessions and ask the candidates questions, Morell said.

Groves echoed the hope for a strong student turnout at each presentation because the position is one that "directly focuses on students and directly serves students."

Riordan and Hellwig expressed excitement about their upcoming visits and the opportunity to engage with students during the selection process.

"Student engagement is a priority of mine and has been throughout my entire career," Riordan said. "I hope to bring this philosophy to U.Va. and make sure students are comfortable with me and know that they have an advocate in me."

Hellwig noted her respect for the University's ideal of student self-governance and said she looks forward to "meeting students on campus as well as possible future colleagues."

Hellwig will be the first candidate to make her presentation, which will be April 15. Riordan will visit Grounds April 18, and Groves' session is scheduled for April 25.
