"Enjoy it now because after college, it's called alcoholism," some T-shirts and bumper stickers humorously proclaim. The stereotype of college being four years worth of drunken revelry has been around for decades and is usually imagined as fairly harmless fun. But, scarily enough, the facts demonstrate that even among college students still in college, alcoholic overindulgence can lead to alcoholism.
A 2002 study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that nearly 6 percent of college students suffer from alcohol dependency, and an additional 31 percent abuse alcohol in clinical terms. Students in both categories were found to be at increased risk of developing an alcohol disorder in the future.
