No thanks

I found it amazing that Savanna Rutherford actually had the audacity to defend the candidacies of Jim Gilmore and Virgil Goode (“Gilmore and Goode are proven,” Oct. 28). First of all, she said that “this year, races in the Old Dominion are tighter than ever.” That’s true for most of the races, except Gilmore’s candidacy for Senate. Some polls have his opponent, Democrat Mark Warner, winning by over 30 percentage points. There’s a reason why Gilmore’s candidacy against Warner is a joke, and it was Gilmore who created the financial, budgetary catastrophe that Warner, his successor and now opponent for Senate, had to fix.

That leaves us with Virgil Goode, who is one of the most, if not the most, racist and xenophobic representatives currently serving in Congress. It was Goode who responded to Keith Ellison’s use of the Koran in his swearing-in ceremony by saying, “If American citizens don’t wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office.” What is this “Virgil Goode” position? It’s a position of restricting immigration from non-Western European countries. All this ended up with the Washington Post writing an op/ed piece on Goode entitled “A Bigot in Congress.”

Before people go to the polls, they should actually know who they’re voting for. Rutherford is asking us to vote for Gilmore, who has proven only that he knows how to create a financial disaster, not solve one, and Goode, a proven bigot. To quote Sarah Palin, “Thanks, but no thanks.”
