The way Barrett Hunter writes in his recent letter to the editor, “Giving Respect” (Nov. 17) one would think all Christians would be upset by Queer and Allied Activism’s recent performance of the Laramie Project at the University Chapel. On the contrary, however, a number of Christian denominations would not be upset by the play’s location in the slightest.
The United Church of Christ, Episcopal Church and Metropolitan Community Churches are all denominations that embrace LGBT people. This doesn’t include the many gay-affirming Christians in other denominations. I myself know deeply devout Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists and Catholics who would be delighted, not offended, to hear that the Laramie Project was performed in the chapel.
Furthermore, holding in the University Chapel a play, which criticizes the vile anti-gay hatred that led two human beings to kill an innocent gay man, is in accordance with Christian belief, not against it. As Jesus said in Matthew 25:40 “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’” (NKJV) Rather than disrespect Christians, Friday’s play honored the most basic teachings of our faith.
