Unbalanced budget reporting

I am the former president of the Virginia Women’s Chorus, writing in regard to the article by Jane Ma (“Student Council denies additional funds for Virginia Women’s Chorus,” 2/25/2009). I appreciate The Cavalier Daily’s efforts to illustrate the impact that Student Council budget cuts are having on student groups around grounds, including the Chorus in its plans to travel to the National Cathedral. I question, however, why Ma felt it appropriate to report on the matter, going so far as to quote a Council member suggesting that the Chorus had submitted a fallacious budget proposal, without quoting a representative of the Chorus beyond the third paragraph of the article. Had she further consulted the Chorus’ President, she might have learned more about the way the group is funded, the costs that it incurs throughout the semester, and the deep impact these budget costs have on its operating capabilities. Such nuanced reporting would not only have given the Chorus a fair chance to respond to the Council’s assertions, but also shed more light on an important way in which the way the greater economic situation affects the University community. It is this that the student body cares about, not the particular budgetary woes of one CIO.
