As a fourth year, I’ve had plenty of time to watch the various comic controversies in The Cavalier Daily but have never been compelled to give my own opinion on the subject. Unfortunately, that changed this morning. While it isn’t my intention to cause an uproar, I would like to address Tuesday’s comic about women drivers (“Titles are Overrated,” 3/24/2009). The comic seems to imply that all women are inherently poor, and even dangerous, drivers. I wouldn’t have taken much note of this comic had it not been for the disturbing trend I’ve noticed of JT Ingram poking fun at women for comedic effect. I recall some of his previous comics depicting shoving sorority girls in front of buses, ridiculing the idea of a woman president, and drugging a date to avoid spending time with her, among other things.
Though individually these comics may be relatively forgettable and forgivable I’d like to ask that Ingram reconsider his usual target of ridicule in his comics. While I doubt it’s his intention to portray himself as misogynistic it has been the impression that I have been getting from his subject matter throughout the year. If this comic had been written about minority drivers instead of women then I’m almost positive it wouldn’t have gotten through The Cavalier Daily’s comic guidelines filter. Why then, I ask, are women not given the same amount of respect?
