Freshman Nicole Agnello shot a 75 on Sunday to tie fellow freshman Brittany Altomare for 31st overall.

Following a disappointing Sunday performance, the Virginia women's golf team placed eighth out of 18 teams in the Tar Heel Invitational this weekend.

The Cavaliers, ranked No. 17, entered the final day of competition in fifth place but hit a combined 300 to drop three spots in the final standings. Virginia hit 292-292-300 on the weekend to total 884 team strokes.

The Cavaliers lacked a single standout performer but used a relatively well-rounded attack to remain competitive. Freshmen Brittany Altomare and Nicole Agnello tied to lead the Cavaliers with 222 total strokes, good for 31st in the Invitational. Senior Whitney Neuhauser finished 42nd with a 224 and junior Calle Nielson finished one stroke behind Neuhauser to claim 48th. Freshman Lauren Greenlief fell to 61st after struggling Sunday. She totaled 228 strokes on the weekend.

Virginia resumes play Oct. 23 to 25 at The Fall Preview in Wilmington, N.C. It is the Cavaliers' last scheduled tournament before the competitive spring season starts in March 2010.
