Pick and choose

The University community must make a more conscious effort to be consistent in the standards to which students are held

"We are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it." spoke Thomas Jefferson to William Roscoe in 1820.

I am an international student from China, graduating in May. After living here for four years, I find myself confused.

I fervently support the honor code. "An honor offense is defined as an intentional act of lying, cheating or stealing which warrants permanent dismissal from the University." As consequence of this system, individuals who jeopardize the integrity of the Academical Village are asked to leave.

It is illegal to drink under the age of 21. Yet at many parties on Grounds, students routinely use fake IDs or lie about their age. According to Merriam Webster's Dictionary, "lying is an act of making an untrue statement with intent to deceive." Why is no honor charge brought up against students who lie about their age to obtain alcohol? Is lying to consume alcohol not dishonorable, therefore "warranting permanent dismissal from the University?" What exactly is the difference between lying to a professor to get good grades versus lying about your age to get alcohol?

I am confused.

Recently on the Corner, white students called two female University students "n------."
