After undergoing an operation involving cartilage work on his left knee Tuesday, redshirt junior guard Sammy Zeglinksi is expected to miss about eight weeks of practice. The Virginia men's basketball season begins Nov. 12.
Given the current estimate, Zeglinski will miss at least 10 games, including the Cavaliers' conference-opener against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg Dec. 5.
He should be medically cleared to play for Virginia's Dec. 20 game against Norfolk State, although he may need to sit out additional time to regain full strength in practice.
Although Zeglinski played during each of Virginia's 31 games last season, starting 29, and led the team in three-point field goals made, assists and steals, coach Tony Bennett has several guards to choose from to replace the upperclassman. Of the six freshmen Bennett brought in as his first recruiting class, three are guards: KT Harrell, Billy Baron and Joe Harris. Senior guard Mustapha Farrakhan could join sophomore Jontel Evans in the backcourt, as well.
