Men finish first at tourney

The Virginia men's and women's cross country teams finished in first and second place at the 37th annual Brooks-Paul Short Run Invitational this weekend at Lehigh University. The No. 22 Cavalier men earned their first-ever title at the Invitational, edging No. 24 Georgetown 132-149, while the No. 12 women finished runner-up to No. 6 Georgetown.

After missing the last nine months because of injury, senior All-American Emil Heineking made his season debut and finished first for Virginia with a time of 23 minutes, 49 seconds. He placed second overall in the meet, just behind 2009 NCAA champion Sam Chelanga of Liberty. Senior Ryan Collins was the Cavaliers' second scorer, finishing 18th with a time of 24:19. Rounding out the top five for Virginia were freshman Chris Foley at 25th, junior Sean Keveren at 43rd and redshirt junior Andrew Revelle, who came in 44th place.

The Cavalier women, meanwhile, were led by sophomore Barbara Strehler, who finished fifth overall with a time of 20:26. Following Strehler were redshirt senior Stephanie Garcia and junior Morgan Gay, who finished seventh in 20:28 and 10th in 20:31, respectively. Junior Rosemary Barber and freshman Ariel Karabinus also contributed with 35th- and 41st-place finishes.

Virginia will compete next at the Panorama Farms Invitational Oct. 15.
