The No. 7 Virginia field hockey team defeated James Madison last night with a 3-0 road victory behind a trio of goals from three different players.
The Cavaliers (3-2) dominated defensively during much of the first half, holding the Dukes (1-3) to zero shots and penalty corner. But the squad could not quite put it together on offense, however, as Virginia failed to convert on seven shots during the first 35 minutes of play.
The Cavaliers brought the same defensive tenacity following intermission and finally broke through on the scoreboard during the 52nd minute as sophomore forward Elly Buckley scored a goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Jess Orrett. The score marked Buckley's fourth goal of season, good for the team lead in scoring.
The Cavaliers added an insurance goal during the 63rd minute, as sophomore forward Carissa Vittese netted a penalty shot for her third goal of the season and her second in the past two games. The team eventually put the game out of reach with a final goal during the 68th minute off the stick of redshirt freshman midfielder Sarah Weber, marking her first goal of the season.
