Love Connection: Tori and Michael

With so many individual quirks, will this pair find sparks between them?

Date: Friday, November 11\nTime: 6:30 p.m.\nLocation: College Inn

Tori:\nMajor: civil engineering

Sexual orientation: straight

University involvement: Club Water Polo, Scuba Club, Photo Club

Hometown: Fredericksburg, Va.

Hobbies: I'm very much into art. From photography to stenciling, I love it all. I've swum my whole life, so I'm into pretty much any water-related activity. I'm a huge dweeb in that I still like cartoons and occasionally read comic books. I also like sleeping. Lots of sleeping.

Ideal date (person): [A] really tall, pale guy with interesting eyes. I'm a fan of out-there personalities with a sense of humor.

Ideal date (activity): One involving food, preferably chocolate. Food plus being under the stars would be a knockout.

If you could date any celebrity, who would it be?: Demetri Martin. I would have his large-nosed babies.

Deal breakers: I can't stand a guy who is too cocky. Quiet self-confidence is amazing, but once you start bragging about how awesome you are, it's over. Also a boring personality. Life is too short to be vanilla.

Describe a typical weekend: Daytime: exploring, sleeping and homework. Nighttime: the Three D's. Dancing, drinking and danger.

If your dating life was a primetime or reality show, what would it be?: "Cops"

What makes you a good catch?: My hair is pretty cool-looking, and I am guaranteed to make you laugh.

Describe yourself in one sentence: Tori is abstract.

Michael:\nMajor: architecture

Sexual orientation: straight

Hometown: Mechanicsville, Va.

University involvement: I feel like I spend most of my life at the A-school, but it's hard to find a basketball game I'm [either] not at and not seriously upset about missing. I've been looking to get more involved with the Student Hip Hop Organization and the Write Club, too, but sometimes there just aren't enough hours in the day.

Hobbies: I really love playing pretty much any sport, although tennis and basketball stand above the rest. Also, I write, and when I'm feeling cocky I ask people to read it.

Ideal date (person): I'd have to go with white, 5-foot-5 and either brown or red hair. I've got a thing for well-dressed, slightly quirky girls who write or really like talking about books. Outside of that, if a girl makes good puns she's pretty much got me. Sorry if that got really specific really fast.

Ideal date (activity): I'd have to go with attending an afternoon tennis match, then dinner. I'm a real big fan of that sport, and it's not so loud and raucous [that] you can't really talk to the person.\nIf you could date any celebrity, who would it be?: Probably Tina Fey. I can't get over how witty she is.

Deal breakers: Flakiness. Fact is it's hard to get to know somebody when half the conversations start with "hey, I've got to cancel."

If your dating life was a primetime or reality show, what would it be?: Either "Maury" or "SpongeBob"

What makes you a good catch: I like to think I'm funny, athletic and maybe even moderately attractive, but I care about more than just that. I try hard to get to know people below the surface, and I honestly care about being something positive in [the lives of people I know], Also, people tell me I have nice eyes, and by people, I mean the cashier at Taco Bell.

Describe yourself in one sentence: I kind of wish my life were wackier.

Michael: I signed up because one of my friends went on a Love Connection date. It seemed kind of fun. Why not?

Tori: My roommate thought I would be an interesting candidate for Love Connection, so I figured, what the heck? Why not? I had never been on a blind date before. I thought it was either going to be really awesome or really s****y. The person was either going to be really nice and really fun or they were going to be super awkward and I would hate them right away, but ... [neither] of those fears [came true].

Michael: I had no expectations, because I had no idea what to expect from the person, and that's really where it all comes from I think. I heard that you match people, but I couldn't even remember what I [had] put on my survey.

Tori: He was standing up by the statue and there was no one else around so I knew it had to be him. I waved awkwardly and said "Michael?" and he was like "Tori." Then we had a handshake, but I was like "Nah, I'm not a handshaker," and I went in for the hug.

Michael: When I first saw her, there wasn't anything that stood out too much. I was just happy to have found her. When I first started talking to her, she seemed like the kind of person I'd be friends with pretty quickly.

Tori: My first impression of him was that he seemed like a nice kid. He looked nice, but I go for odd sort of people. So I thought he looked like a normal person and wasn't sure what to think; he looked a little too normal.

Michael: We just walked down to the Corner and stopped at the first place that felt right. We talked about what majors we were, and the difference between computer engineering and computer science. I didn't know the difference, and she didn't know either, until she had to pick a major.

Tori: We were talking about what we were in school for, what sports we did, things like that and other typical "get to know you" things. Of course, I had to bring up Pokemon because I'm a huge nerd. I don't know what he thought of that. He seemed cool with it, but I just brushed it off.

Michael: We realized pretty quick that we were both a little quirky. We got into a conversation about how she's really good at origami. I told her that someone once tried to convince me they could fold a paper crane with their mouth, which they couldn't do. We talked about how I met my exact double once, but he was actually my exact opposite.

Tori: I feel like we have the same demeanor about things. We have a similar sense of humor, [but] we just had different experiences, so that's where we differed. We didn't have a lot in common, but then again, most of the people I'm friends with I don't have a lot in common with.

Michael: I walked her to the end of the Corner, but we both live in opposite directions, so we went in completely opposite directions.

Tori: We both realized it was nice, but there weren't sparks. So he was like, "I have to head back to my place." We hugged and said bye, but then it was weird because I was still standing there, just waiting to cross the street.

Michael: I didn't get her number, because I don't think about things like that, but if I found her again [we might hang out]. I'll Facebook friend her. I just need to confirm that it's her first.

Tori: We didn't exchange phone numbers. I didn't really think about that until after. I don't know if I'd go for a second date, but I would definitely hang out again. There wasn't instant chemistry, but he seemed nice.

Michael: I'd rank [the date] an 8 out of 10. There's no particular reason why. It was just good.

Tori: I would rank it a 6 or a 7. It was an average date, but not painfully average.

Michael and Tori have not become Facebook friends.
