Virginia opens with win

Freshmen shine during debut; veterans Owen, Baker fuel potent Cavalier attack

After succumbing to Loyola in back-to-back season openers the past two years, the No. 10 Virginia women's lacrosse team finally got the best of its border-state foe as the Cavaliers kicked off their 2012 campaign with a 14-9 victory against the No. 7 Greyhounds.

"The last couple years, they've had our number, so to come out on top... was great," Virginia coach Julie Myers said. "We've been working really hard to get ready for this game. To see the girls play pretty well consistently throughout was just exactly what we needed."

The Cavaliers' (1-0) offense, which features three players on the Tewaaraton National Player of the Year watch list, relied on crisp passes and heads-up shot selection to tally 14 goals - the most by a Virginia squad in a season opener since 2009.
