The attorneys representing former University student George Huguely filed for an extension in the Virginia Court of Appeals last week, earning themselves an additional 30 days to file trial transcripts. Fran Lawrence and Rhonda Quagliana, Huguely’s attorneys, now have until Nov. 29 instead of Oct. 30 to submit their record of trial proceedings.
This type of request is common and points to a backlog in court reports, said John Vollino, chief deputy clerk for the appellate court. “Filing an appeal isn’t about the decision that was made,” Vollino said. “It’s about a mistake somewhere in the chain that would then come out in the transcripts.”
Vollino said the actions of the defense indicate they will ultimately try to appeal the 23-year sentence Huguely received in August for the murder of his former girlfriend Yeardley Love. “We are at the preliminary stage right now,” Vollino said.
Huguely is currently incarcerated at Keen Mountain Correctional Facility in Oakwood, Va. — a level four out of six for prison security, with level-six prisons being the most secure.
