R. Edward Howell, vice president and CEO of the Medical Center, will retire in July 2014, the University announced Wednesday.
“It has been my honor to work with thousands of dedicated faculty and staff to provide high quality care to patients throughout Virginia,” Howell said in the University press release.
University President Teresa Sullivan praised Howell’s work in the course of his 37-year career in healthcare. “During an era of significant changes in healthcare, Ed and his team have worked well to prepare the Medical Center and the Health System for the future,” Sullivan said.
Howell has served in his current position at the Medical Center since 2002 and has overseen a wide variety of clinical and administrative functions. Howell said his retirement will allow him to pursue “academic and personal” interests, including teaching classes at the Medical and Nursing Schools.
The Medical Center has made numerous expansions during Howell’s tenure, including the addition of the Emily Couric Clinical Cancer Center and the Transitional Care Hospital.
Howell’s retirement this summer will allow him to oversee the completion of another project of his. “The new outpatient facility for U.Va. Children’s Hospital has been a priority of mine, and I wanted to see the project through to completion before my retirement,” he said.
The University has appointed Executive Vice President Pat Hogan to lead a search committee for Howell’s replacement.
