Roughly 300 students at Virginia Commonwealth University were notified via email this week that they may have been exposed to tuberculosis after learning an infected student had attended multiple classes before being diagnosed. Individuals who may have come into contact with the student are being offered screenings.
The University does not currently have any known cases of the disease, Student Health Director Christopher Holstege said. “There is no alert at U.Va. currently,” he said. “If there was a notification of an exposure that occurred here, Student Health would investigate, screen those who might have been exposed and, if necessary, work with the Thomas Jefferson Health Department to assure the safety of our student body.”
Tuberculosis is a highly contagious respiratory infection that can be transmitted by an affected individual talking, sneezing or coughing.
