Weekend Previews: November 15-17

Extensive previews for Virginia’s games in women’s soccer, field hockey, and men’s and women’s basketball this weekend ran in Thursday’s edition of The Cavalier Daily and remain available online.

Cross Country
What: NCAA Southeast Regional
Where: Panorama Farms, Earlysville, Va.
When: Friday — Men’s race at 12 p.m.; Women’s race at 1:15 p.m.
The Skinny: The Virginia cross country team will host the NCAA Southeast Regional meet Friday. The No. 11 women will contend with 41 other schools in the 6K race, including No. 19 William & Mary and ACC rivals No. 28 Duke and Virginia Tech. After a second place finish at the ACC Championships earlier this month in which four Cavaliers finished in the top 14 and senior Barbara Strehler placed fourth, the squad is aiming for a high finish Friday. Although they finished eighth last season, the Virginia women have thrived at the Southeast Regional recently, winning the title in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

In the men’s 10K race, the Cavaliers will try to defend their 2012 Southeast Regional title against tough opponents in No. 17 Eastern Kentucky and No. 18 North Carolina. The Tar Heels edged the Virginia men in the ACC Championships, with their second-place finish outstripping the Cavaliers’ fourth-place effort. Virginia is counting on strong outings from sophomore Kyle King and senior Thomas Porter, who finished seventh and 13th at the ACC Championships, respectively.

If either Cavalier team places first or second Friday, it will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships Nov. 23.

Volleyball
What: Virginia (15-11, 8-6 ACC) at North Carolina State (19-7, 10-4 ACC); at No. 15 North Carolina (22-3, 11-3 ACC)
Where: Raleigh, N.C.; Chapel Hill, N.C.
When: Friday, 7 p.m. (NC State); Saturday 5 p.m. (North Carolina)
The Skinny: Virginia hits the road this weekend to play two teams that swept the Cavaliers earlier this season in Charlottesville. Stuck in a three-way tie for fifth in the ACC, the Cavaliers are hoping a triumphant weekend will boost their conference standing. Their opponents, NC State and No. 15 North Carolina, both lead Virginia in the ACC standings and both defeated the Cavaliers twice last season.

Less than one month ago, when the Wolfpack and Tar Heels throttled the Cavaliers, Virginia’s season hit a low point when head coach Dennis Hohenshelt questioned the team’s effort. The Cavaliers responded by winning four consecutive games and have won five of their last six. Last weekend, Virginia fell to Florida State 3-1 before bouncing back to oust Miami by the same margin. Both games were at home and both opponents entered the contests ranked higher in the ACC the Cavaliers.

NC State enters the weekend fourth in the ACC and has won all seven of its conference home games. North Carolina is currently third in the ACC and has not lost to Virginia since 2008.

In a weekend of rematches, Virginia will turn to libero Emily Rottman, the team’s lone senior and leader in digs.
