University to launch publicly available hub for school diversity data

Previously available data to become centralized

The University is set to launch a Diversity Data Dashboard that will help make data on diversity at the University more accessible. The Dashboard, which has been in the works for several years, will contain data on race, ethnicity and gender for various groups at the University.

Marcus Martin, vice president and chief officer for diversity and equity, will speak about the Dashboard at the upcoming Nov. 14 Board of Visitors meeting, as the University prepares to launch the link that will open its access to the public.

Meghan Faulkner, who is in charge of programs and projects in Martin’s office, said the Board had discussed the project at length. The idea was originally proposed by the Diversity Council, about six years ago, she said, though the developing of the website has only be going on for the past year.

The website will not provide new information to the public, but rather aims to provide already available information in a more comprehensive platform. Data will go back to 2009.

“[The data] has always been available,” Faulkner said. “There was sort of a consensus that for various reasons people would want to be able to access and interpret data related to race and gender. The dashboard makes it [easier] to interpret visually.”

Faulkner said the Dashboard will allow viewers to access cross-section data based on school and position, among other things.

George Stovall, director of Institutional Assessment and Studies, who worked on pulling the data needed to create the dashboard, said he started gathering data for the project this past summer and the process was relatively straight-forward.

“It probably took me four hours worth of work, which is not a lot of money,” he said. “Now for each year I already have the script written. It is a small cost.”

This website should go live sometime in the next two weeks.
