Honor Committee considers increasing transparency of proceedings

Batten representative Matt Comey presents statistics from other universities

At Sunday’s meeting, the Honor Committee heard proposed ideas for making Honor proceedings more transparent to the public.

Matt Comey, a second-year in the Batten Masters program, presented several proposals to the Honor Committee. The proposals were based on research Comey did on proceedings at other schools and student concerns.

Comey’s presentation included three foci: adding more information in the year in review statistics, publishing juror satisfaction surveys and making the public summaries more informative.

Other ideas included uploading a video of a mock hearing and publishing faculty surveys every four years, alternating with student surveys.

Currently, the Honor Committee publishes summaries of hearings and survey reports. All students receive Honor newsletters, which include statistics from the year in review. Additionally, there are other online resources and education events.

By making data from Honor proceedings more accessible, Comey said he hopes students will be more educated when voting in the spring referendum.
