Philadelphia rock group Modern Baseball recently released a six-song EP, “The Perfect Cast.” Themes of life, relationships and identity characterize the songs and sometimes all converge in the same song as in “Revenge of the Nameless Ranger.”
The group takes music back to the days of 2000s emo-punk rock but replace the teen angst with substantive and thought-provoking lyrics. This trend begins in the first lines of the EP’s opening song, “The Waterboy Returns”: “Hey you / That’s no way out / You can’t find help in a bottle or a cut.” Modern Baseball’s conversational take on difficult topics such as depression makes the content more approachable but still serious. The band packages these characteristics in a dynamic song that balances a soft opening verse with a danceable chorus.
As a whole, the EP is diverse in style — from the dance component of “The Waterboy Returns” to the angrier, grunge feel of “Infinity Exposed” to the softer and smoother vibes of “…And Beyond.” The band effectively utilizes this EP to show off all they can do, giving fans of Modern Baseball to look forward to with their next upcoming album, “Holy Ghost.”
