University announces death of first-year John Popovich during Winter Break

Popovich dies of natural causes, his family says

The University announced the death of first-year student John Paul Popovich on Dec. 18. Popovich died in his sleep of natural causes at his home in Sterling, Va., according to his family.

In an email to the student body Dean of Students Allen Groves said Popovich was an active member of the Echols/Humphrey dorm community, and was beginning involvement in a number of organizations at the University, including the American Medical Student Association and the Alexander Hamilton Society.

Before joining the University community he attended Dominion High School in Loudoun County and swam competitively, serving as the captain of his team and setting a state record in the 200 individual medley.

“The loss of a classmate and fellow member of our community is difficult, all the more so when our community has scattered far and wide for Winter Break.” Groves said in an email to the student body in which he also indicated any students in need of support should contact Counseling and Psychological Services.
