In its weekly meeting, Student Council passed resolutions to approve several new CIOs and looked into the University of Virginia Investment Management Company’s investments related to the Strategic Investment Fund. Committee chairs also updated the general body on their recent activities.
The first bill on which Student Council voted included four organizations on Grounds up for CIO status. MacKenzie Hodgson, third-year Engineering student and vice president for organizations, introduced the bill.
The first was CavFact, which will focus on checking facts in local and national politics — especially those relevant to the University community.
Another organization included in the resolution was an architecture magazine, which will be run by students in the Architecture School and others with an interest in architecture. Hodgson said the magazine will focus on student work and could even appeal to potential Architecture students.
The bill passed with a unanimous favorable vote, and both groups received official CIO status, along with two other groups in consideration — the Undergraduate Real Estate Club and the Frank Batten Investment Club.
David Birkenthal, a third-year College student and community affairs co-chair, then explained a bill to look into UVIMCO’s administration and investments. He said the project could help with the Student Council’s ongoing efforts to inform the student body on the Strategic Investment Fund.
“We wanted to find out where that $100 million is really coming from,” Birkenthal said, referring to the money in the SIF.
He said the project would culminate in a neutral report on how UVIMCO works and will look into what outside investments UVIMCO is making.
“We’re going to bring back a report to the general body,” he said. “Information is power.”
The bill passed unanimously, with one member abstaining.
Finally, Brett Curtis, third-year Curry student and representative body chair, introduced a bill supporting the University football team in this weekend’s homecoming game.
The bill laid out spirit events hosted by Student Council, as well as numerous University traditions with the message of supporting the football team in the upcoming game. The resolution passed unanimously.
