The No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team is going to the NCAA Championship match after defeating No. 3 Ohio State, 4-2, in a tightly-contested semifinal match.
It was a wild Monday in Athens, Ga., with expected inclement weather forcing the match to be pushed up from a 12 p.m. start time to 10 a.m. This, however, was not enough to prevent a setback, and both teams faced a four-hour weather delay.
Monday’s semifinal matches started outdoors, but were moved to indoor courts after the weather delay. During match play, Ohio State (33-4) got off to a quick start and took the doubles point over Virginia (33-1), taking a 1-0 lead into singles play.
However, Virginia fought back in singles play to clinch the victory and earn a chance to defend their title in the NCAA Championship match. It was junior Henrik Wiersholm who clinched the match with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Ohio State redshirt freshman Kyle Seelig.
This will be Virginia’s third straight NCAA Championship match and sixth in seven years. They have won three of the last four national championships and will look to notch a three-peat in Coach Brian Boland’s final season.
Virginia will face ACC rival No. 9 North Carolina in Tuesday’s Championship match. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Athens.
