Day one
Virginia opened the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. with a 13th-place finish in the pentathlon from junior Alix Still. Still earned second-team All-America honors, becoming the first Cavalier to do so in the pentathlon since the 1982 season.
Still began the pentathlon with a collegiate-best performance in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in at 8.62 seconds and ranking ninth on Virginia’s all-time performance list for the event. She went on to clear 1.66 meters (5’5.4”) in the high jump and threw a distance of 9.81 meters (32’2.2”) in the shot put.
In the long jump, Still set a personal best with a leap of 5.80 meters (19’0.5”). She finished her day with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.7, her top finish in any event during the contest.
Vin Lananna, director of track and field and cross country and associate athletics director for administration, was very happy with Still’s performance.
“I am really proud of the progress Alix made this season,” Lananna said. “She and coach [Mario] Wilson assembled an impressive season. I look forward to watching her compete this spring.”
Day two
The second day of the meet featured senior Halle Hazzard, who set a school record in the 60-meter dash for the Cavaliers with a time of 7.23 seconds. Hazard’s performance also earned her a spot in Saturday’s event finals.
Hazzard finished in seventh place overall for the event, qualifying for the finals based on time. She entered the event ranked No. 14 nationally with a top time of 7.26 seconds earlier this season.
Also competing for Virginia was sophomore Jada Seaman, who picked up a 12th-place finish in the long jump and earned second-team All-America honors. She recorded her top mark on her first attempt of the day with a jump of 6.33 meters (20’9.25”).
Day three
The Cavaliers’ final two performers each earned first-team All-America honors on the final day of competition at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Hazzard earned her honors with an eighth-place finish in the 60-meter dash finals and a time of 7.27 seconds.
“Halle Hazzard established herself as a national-caliber sprinter this indoor season,” Lananna said. “She will be ready to go this spring.”
Junior Owayne Owens secured a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a personal best of 16.53 meters (54’2.75”). Owens entered the competition ranked No. 4 in the nation and was the ACC champion in the event this year for Virginia.
Having completed their indoor track and field season, the Cavaliers will now set their sights on the outdoor track and field season, which they open next weekend when they host the U.Va. Opener meet March 20 at Lannigan Field.
