Sophomore goalkeeper Holden Brown gave up two goals against the Fighting Irish and currently averages 1.32 goals allowed per match as the only goalkeeper who has taken the net for the Cavaliers.

Virginia men’s soccer lost 2-1 against Notre Dame on Friday night at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. The Cavaliers (3-6-1, 0-4-0 ACC) fell behind two goals and could not complete a comeback after a late goal cut the lead to one.

The Fighting Irish (5-4-1, 2-1-1 ACC) struck first in the game with a goal in the 22nd minute. Senior midfielder Mohamed Omar had a glancing header off of a corner kick from junior midfielder Michael Pellegrino that went past sophomore goalkeeper Holden Brown and into the net, giving Notre Dame a 1-0 lead. The Cavaliers were outshot in the first half 3-7.

Virginia struggled to get any offensive chances in the second half, failing to register a shot until the 90th minute. In the 64th minute, the Fighting Irish doubled their lead after a shot from senior forward Jack Lynn curled around the outstretched arms of Brown.

The Cavaliers finally broke through the Notre Dame defense in the final minute of the game. With 45 seconds left, freshman forward Kome Ubogu took a shot from the right side of the box that went off the crossbar and into the back of the net to put Virginia on the board. The goal was Ubogu’s third in the past two matches, and he leads the team with goals on the season.

The Cavaliers return to action Tuesday at Klöckner Stadium. The match against UNC Wilmington is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
