During this time of year, elections can seem all-consuming. Students pass around sheets in class scouting signatures, various hopefuls visit different clubs to talk about their platform and emails are sent reminding students to vote. However, there is a slightly more silent presence on Grounds coordinating all the different processes.

Second-year College student Kris Cody recently launched PAKA, an alpaca wool sweater company. Based out of Cusco, Peru, PAKA’s mission is to “provide Peruvian women weavers with resources to share their talent with the world while financially empowering themselves,” according to its website. Since the launch, Cody has been connecting with artists and influencers including Chance the Rapper, Jamie O’Brien and Moxie Raia to promote the sweaters.

Last week, students, faculty, staff and community members came together to celebrate the Earth and sustainability during the eighth annual Earth Week. This year’s theme was “Experience Sustainability” and featured more than 20 events throughout the week.

After four years of writing and organizing the Love Connection segment for the Life section of The Cavalier Daily, fourth-year Commerce student Alex Stock is finally retiring. The feature matches two students based on the compatibility of their answers to a questionnaire and sets up a first date.

With the primaries for the 2016 presidential election underway, it is time to begin considering the challenges the next administration will face. The Miller Center — an affiliate of the University which studies presidential scholarship, political history and public policy — has launched an initiative to help policymakers and political scholars start thinking ahead.

In an effort to consolidate its large staff, Housing and Residence Life has moved its central office from Dabney to Gibbons following the opening of Gibbons dorm this fall in the Alderman Road Residence Area. The new office is located in the annex or office wing of Gibbons, and the space provides Housing staff members a more cohesive work environment.

This year, students have the opportunity to participate in the first University-wide Late Night initiative. In order to provide fun, safe events on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, the Game Room and common spaces on the first floor of Newcomb will remain open until 2 a.m. University Programs Council is in charge of organizing the events, which are called “After Hours.”

Fourth-year College student and women’s lacrosse player Caroline Seats joined Boston College women’s lacrosse players Covie Stanwick and Molly Erdle this December in Yards for Yeardley — a project in which teams pledge to run one million yards in one month. The project has quickly expanded to include women’s and men’s teams at colleges and high schools across the country.

Dr. Nancy Dunlap announced Wednesday she plans to step down as dean of the Medical School in November. The University has appointed a search committee, led by Dr. Richard Shannon, executive vice president for health affairs, and John Simon, executive vice president and provost.
