The Office for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion hosted Seattle-based author and speaker, Ijeoma Oluo, for a virtual conversation on anti-racist work Friday. Assistant Dean Shilpa Davé moderated the conversation.

A candlelight vigil was held at the McIntire Amphitheater Saturday to mourn the victims of the recent Atlanta-area shootings, six of whom were Asian women, and the lives lost as a result of the recent rise in anti-Asian hate crimes. Students, faculty and community members filled the amphitheater while respecting social distancing. Many brought flowers and candles and wrote messages in honor of the victims.

The Inter-Sorority Council announced in a statement Friday that they will resume in-person activities in strict compliance with University and state health guidelines. The statement was circulated internally by Clare Scully, ISC president and third-year Commerce student, and comes after both the Inter-Fraternity Council and ISC banned in-person gatherings Feb. 26 after both organizations faced criticism on social media for permitting in-person recruitment events.

Three committees of the Board of Visitors — The Buildings and Grounds Committee, the Committee on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the Audit, Compliance and Risk Committee — met Friday morning to discuss a number of projects and plans for the coming years as well as give reports on internal affairs within the University.

The University kicked off virtual global internships for two cohorts for the spring semester three weeks ago. The program has 19 participants across four internship placements. The spring global internship program consists of a 14-week internship and a one or two-credit Global Studies topics course.

As of Thursday, the U.Va. COVID-19 Tracker reported 35 total new cases of COVID-19 in the University community since Monday. The tracker recorded six cases Monday, 10 Tuesday and 19 Wednesday. The total daily average number of cases has decreased from 12 last week to 10 this week.

Bond House, the new installment of the Brandon Ave. residential community for upperclassmen, opened Aug. 25 for student move-in, despite being unfinished. Furniture was placed Sept. 4, but residents have reported to facilities management services following encounters with mice and centipedes and trouble with kitchen appliances.

The Honor Committee underwent a change to its structure over the summer, choosing not to renew the Alternative Sanction Working Group for the 2019-2020 academic year.

Students moved into Bond House for the first time Aug. 25 before classes resumed at the University, but some students told The Cavalier Daily that the on-Grounds housing remained partially unfinished until Sept. 4.

The University’s Board of Visitors met Aug. 2 for a final vote on President Jim Ryan’s strategic plan, “A Great and Good University — the 2030 Plan.” The vote was unanimous. Ryan’s plan builds upon former President Teresa Sullivan’s goals, as described in her Cornerstone Plan, which was developed in 2013.

The Jefferson Literary and Debating Society presented Rita Dove, the first African American poet laureate consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress, as its third speaker for their 2019 Distinguished Speaker Series in Hotel C., Jefferson Hall West Range Friday evening. About 50 people — the majority of them being Jefferson Society members — were in attendance.

The Jefferson Literary and Debating Society hosted Allan Lichtman, political historian and history professor at American University Friday evening in Hotel C., Jefferson Hall West Range as the first speaker in its 2019 Distinguished Speaker Series. About 40 people were in attendance at the event.

The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy offered admission to 79 students out of a pool of 200 applicants for the Class of 2021, with an admission rate of 40 percent on March 7. The offer rate has gone down. In the fall of 2018 and 2017, 86 students and 84 students were admitted respectively. However, since Batten has not yet released information regarding final decisions from accepted students, although decisions were due March 14th, there are no official demographic statistics for the Class of 2021.
