As the final seconds ticked away from Virginia’s NIT quarterfinal game, coach Tony Bennett wrapped Jontel Evans in a hug. The Cavaliers’ 75-64 loss against Iowa marked an unceremonious finish to Virginia’s season and Evans’ four-year Cavalier career.

Both senior linebacker Steve Greer and offensive tackle Oday Aboushi close their Virginia careers as the conference’s best at their respective positions. The two Cavaliers earned first-team All-ACC honors Monday. The league also recognized sophomore tight end Jake McGee, sophomore cornerback Demetrious Nicholson and senior linebacker La’Roy Reynolds with honorable mentions.

The Maryland football team must move to its fifth quarterback this year after Caleb Rowe’s season-ending ACL injury. The Terrapins’ original starter, C.J. Brown, suffered the same injury in August, and his replacement Perry Hills tore his ACL against N.C. State Oct. 20. Third-string signal caller Devin Burns broke his foot that same game, forcing Rowe under center for Saturday’s 20-17 loss against Boston College. Freshman linebacker Shawn Petty will now start for the beleaguered team … Clemson announced Monday its new athletics director will defect from an in-conference foe. Georgia Tech Athletics Director Dan Radakovich will replace the Tigers’ retiring Terry Don Phillips. Radakovich previously worked in athletic departments at Louisiana State University and Clemson’s in-state rival South Carolina … A week after Duke clinched bowl eligibility for the first time since 1994, No. 9 Florida State delivered a rude awakening to the ACC’s Cinderella team. The Seminoles crushed the Blue Devils 48-7 to crack the BCS Top 10. No. 13 Clemson is the only other conference program ranked in the BCS standings.

Two Virginia football players earned weekly ACC accolades Monday after helping the Cavaliers muster a 17-16 win against Penn State. Senior linebacker Steve Greer was recognized for posting a career-high 15 tackles and two sacks. The conference also honored senior offensive tackle Oday Aboushi, who had 12 knockdowns and graded out at 92 percent …. Clemson senior Spencer Benton serves as the Tiger’s backup place kicker but took center stage Saturday with a 61-yard field goal against Ball State. The field goal was the longest in ACC history, besting Florida State’s 2007 record by one yard … The North Carolina men’s soccer team lost five of its top six scorers from last year’s NCAA championship team but showed few signs of growing pains Saturday night. The No. 1-ranked Tar Heels downed Virginia Tech 2-0 in its conference opener and moved to 4-0 on the season.

a much-needed boost and downed Auburn, 26-19. Senior tailback Andre Ellington rushed for 231
yards, helping the Tigers erase memories of a 70-33 blowout loss to West Virginia in the Orange
Bowl last January. The teams battled at the Georgia Dome, the same stadium where Auburn
bested Virginia, 43-24, in the 2012 Chick-fil-A Bowl … N. C. State fared worse against its own
SEC opponent, falling 35-21 to Tennessee. Wolfpack coach Tom O’Brien told reporters Monday
that cornerback C.J. Wilson would be suspended for four games due to eligibility issues … The
NCAA Friday cleared another North Carolina school of potential academic infractions. The
University of North Carolina had faced sanctions after its African-American studies department
allegedly falsified grades for athletes, including former two-sport standout and current NFL star
Julius Peppers.
