There is no question that the year 2017, in its entirety, provided its fair share of powerful and significant events which will undoubtedly influence and alter the future for years to come. While much of the news is categorized as negative by the public, there were a mix of important stories both good and bad. What every single one of these stories does have in common, however, is clear: It all rests on the shoulders of Katy Perry.

On Wednesday, the trailer for the latest installment in the Marvel franchise, “Avengers: Infinity Wars,” was released to the world. Touted as the "beginning of the end" for the Marvel storyline, and combining all the current Marvel superheroes into a final showdown with the dreaded villain Thanos, this is one of the most expensive, most precarious and most anticipated movies of all time. And this trailer made this new movie look frickin' awesome!

I don’t usually talk about my personal business with anyone, much less publish it in a news publication read cover-to-cover by tens of people. However, Katy, you left my no choice; I’ve sent countless texts and more voicemails than I care to admit to, all asking for a chance to talk. I assume that you’re on tour and promoting your music, and that I’m nothing more than a convenient sexual exploitation to you, but hear me out.

I have two sisters and a brother, but this story is just about the two sisters, Saoirse (“Seer-sha”) and Maire. I was 10 years old, Saoirse was six and Maire was four at the time. For one reason or another, a morning before catching the bus, Saoirse was given a new dress by my parents, for some formal event at school that day (she’d never owned a dress beforehand). While the event didn’t enforce formal attire, the societal pressures of women needing to differentiate (and compete with) their fashion choices descended upon Saoirse’s first-grade class early. Nevertheless, I distinctly remember the look of utter joy on her face when she unpacked the overpriced, overflowing article of clothing, the delight on her rosy face.

I am writing this to a few of my best friends. I do so knowing that they will not see this because they are almost certainly playing video-games right now, which is the very reason I am imploring them to stop in this plea. The irony of this is not lost on me, and it wouldn’t on them either, but they’d have to look up the word irony first, which would require them to pause playing the video-games, and…you get it.

If you’re interested in securing that post-grad financial security and welfare (not the kind the poor will be stealing from hard working folks like you to feed their families), then you’ve got your eyes locked on one thing: a corporate internship. Getting great grades, prepping for interviews, and strategically networking are all going to get you in the door, but if you really want to succeed, if you really want to climb that ladder, then you’ve got to be prepared to do two things. Number one, stay away from ladders, they’re dangerous and often not high enough anyhow.

Following the release of his latest single “I’m The One,” DJ Khaled’s hottest track has taken the world by storm and is causing a global awakening for love, tolerance and prosperity. With an Avengers-esque line-up of featured stars and a beat which the Food and Drug Administration classifies as “dangerously and intoxicatingly addictive,” this song soared to the number one trending song in the world. More importantly, however, it is the cultural impact this song is already creating that is most important.

Dear Mr. Reynolds,

My great-grandmother (“Mom Dondero,” as we referred to her as) was a shrewd woman. It is still my belief that she willed herself to live long enough to discipline her great-grandchildren out of spite for all of her children’s spouses and, eventually, offspring. My grandmother, Tutu, was similarly harsh to her children, but never to her grandchildren — for us, she always reserved a certain sweetness and understanding.

In their most recent study, the Brookings Institution found that students who traveled out of their way to study at distant coffeehouses did not, in fact, perform better than their counterparts.

Everyone is soft nowadays. That’s right, I said it. I know I’m going to catch a radiator’s worth of heat for saying this, but I’m a maverick. I speak off the cuff, and what’s coming off my wrist right now is this hot take: people are way too concerned nowadays with being grammatically correct.

To all five of the people who regularly read this page: hello. My name is Brennan Lee, and I am the new editor for the Humor section here at The Cavalier Daily. If you’re wondering who the old editor was, her name was Nancy-Wren, and yes, I am what you would call a “step-down” from her.

I have only spent a few months getting acclimated to the new environment on "Grounds" amongst my fellow "hoos" as a "first-year." I get it; as someone so new to the college education system, my opinion doesn't hold much value, and I really ought to just zip it and defer to the upperclassmen. But I believe my (and our) first-year perspective to be of value. The external and less prejudiced origin from where my viewpoint derives itself from is necessary to spurring change and, consequently, improvement to this great university. Today, I urge reconsideration on only one event, and one event only.

Drake is a huge part of all of our lives. In a sense, Drake is a major component of what it means to be human. Whether the objective is to express one’s personal identity, take a political or ideological stance or to simply want to create a party-like atmosphere, it seems that since the formation of human civilization, there has been an available form of Drake to accomplish such a goal.

One of the most surprising discoveries of this election is that we as a country are far more polarized than we ever cared to admit. This unfortunate ideological and political split is reaching a degree of separation that does not bode well for democracy in this country; already, many academic institutions are observing growing resentment towards our system of government. In order to correctly analyze this issue, we must first look at how we became so polarized. Here is a chronological arrangement of the most divisive moments in American history:

Failure is an experience most students attending the University are not accustomed to dealing with. Up to the end of syllabus week, we are all champions, intellects amongst the highest caliber in the nation, and everything comes quite naturally. Once the school year is truly underway, we are all reminded of the rigorous standards and expectations that we undertake when we agree to attend a school of such prestige that you can’t even call its property “campus” (please forgive me for using the c-word). To the first-years reading this (and the upperclassmen who missed this lesson), let me help you with this sudden feeling of ineptitude. Let me teach you how to manage the trials of University life when things don’t go your way.

Any fan of Virginia football who witnessed the loss that new head coach Bronco Mendenhall and the Cavaliers suffered this past Saturday at the hand of the Richmond Spiders must, at the very least, feel disheartened. A season filled with such promise (optimism buoyed by Mendenhall’s reputation of instilling discipline and accountability) already seems deflated just one game in. While it’s terribly early in the season to make any predictions, I want to prepare the Wahoo faithful for the fact that we might just have to accept this as a rebuilding season. In sports, a typical rebuilding season would include giving younger players more playing time, testing different offensive and defensive schemes and accepting losses for the sake of developing the coaching staff’s system. However, if we’re going to truly embrace a rebuilding season and invest in the future, let’s do it the right way: let’s demolish and rebuild Scott Stadium.
