Alternative rock band Grouplove, famous for its 2011 hit “Tongue Tied,” recently dropped the album “Big Mess,” a compilation of 11 tracks about love, loss and pursuing the true meaning of life. While the band stuck to a straightforward rock sound with its previous work, “Big Mess” showcases Grouplove’s experimental side as it mixes EDM elements with a more traditional rock sound. While the combination of these two genres creates a fresh sound for individual songs, the album overall lacks coherence.

Upbeat, fresh and uncommon, Mumford & Sons’ latest single “There Will be Time” featuring Baaba Maal may be their best yet. While the song is strikingly different from their former work, this new direction is a blessing for the band as the vibes and rhythm of this soon-to-be hit will leave fans craving more.

Last week, hit folk rock group The Lumineers dropped “Cleopatra,” the band’s first major release since its self-titled debut album in 2012. While the somber tones and rustic vibes of this 11-track album are reminiscent of the band’s previous work, the lyrical composition of the songs makes this album standout in its genre.

Electronic and dance group Lust for Youth last week dropped “Compassion,” a compilation of eight ambient tracks about love and everyday life. While electronic and dance music genres have skyrocketed in popularity in the past decade, “Compassion” seems to be hindering its progress with its unappealing, over-processed sounds as well as its bizarre and jarring lyrics.

When Justin Bieber’s first collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, “Where Are Ü Now,” topped charts around the world, anticipation for Bieber’s 2015 album “Purpose” skyrocketed. The first song released off the album, “What Do You Mean,” showed considerable potential for Bieber’s future work with its catchy lyrics and beat. However, with Bieber’s new album single “Sorry,” which dropped on Oct. 22, it seems as though he is slipping back to his old music style.

In his latest album, “35 mph Town,” Toby Keith trades in his red solo cup to take his sound in a new direction. Released on Oct. 9, the ten-track album shows Keith experimenting with different genres of music including rock ‘n’ roll and reggae. While he may have been trying to target a broader audience with this album, his new sound lacks coherency.

This was their first major release since their debut album “Settle” premiered in 2013. The fifteen-song album is a compilation of catchy electronic songs with one-of-a-kind beats and features renowned artists including Lorde, the Weeknd and Sam Smith.
