University President Jim Ryan sent the University community another statement Wednesday afternoon addressing the nationwide protests over the murder of George Floyd and continued police brutality toward Black Americans. The updated statement comes four days after Ryan posted a reflection on social media, which faced criticism from many community members for what they saw as a failure to adequately address the underlying causes of ongoing protests.

German political scientist Hajo Funke, the German department’s Max Kade Distinguished Visiting Professor, is unable to enter the United States to teach at the University because the State Department has yet to issue him a visa. Funke is currently co-teaching two classes with Jeffrey Grossman, chair of the German department, on far-right populism from Berlin via videoconference.

The Asian Leaders Council and the Jefferson Literary and Debating Society sponsored a debate Friday evening in Jefferson Hall on the resolution, “Should cultural organizations have an obligation to be political?” Faculty judges and audience voters determined the affirmative side the winner of the debate.

The Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy held a discussion with Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., about the origins of and the debates surrounding the constitutional issue of war powers. He then addressed the resolution he introduced to the Senate Jan. 3 that would clarify Congress’s constitutional obligation to deliberate and vote on acts of war.

During Thanksgiving and winter breaks this year, Student Council will continued to run a discounted shuttle service from Grounds to the Dulles and Richmond airports. The AirBus program is in its second year of operation since being reinstated. An earlier version of the service was in operation several years ago.

Current undergraduate students in the Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and the McIntire School of Commerce came to the Multicultural Student Center Thursday to talk to second-year applicants. The event, titled “Cake with Comm and Chattin’ with Batten,” provided an informal and comfortable venue for students of color to ask questions over cake and coffee.

In 1979, University President Frank Hereford attempted to censor The Cavalier Daily after it had reported extensively on tense race relations at the University. The publication’s leaders refused to accept the administration’s attempts at oversight. This decision escalated the push for editorial and financial independence that had been developing since 1978 — when the paper first rejected allocated funding from Student Council’s Student Activities Committee. Today, The Cavalier Daily remains independent from the University. This is the story of how it happened.

U.Va. Police will be fully staffed tonight in anticipation of the increase in “high-risk situations” tonight and the rest of this weekend. Both University Police and the Charlottesville Police Department are “aware” of the high level of activity that will occur this weekend and say that they are preparing accordingly.

The U.Va. Community Food Pantry partnered with U.Va. Dining Sept. 25 to raise 800 pounds of food through its “Stock the Pantry” event. At Newcomb Dining Hall, students had the option to donate a meal swipe to secure one pound of food for the pantry — a student-run volunteer initiative, started by former College student Gwen Dilworth, that seeks to alleviate food insecurity on Grounds.
