If you didn’t post it, did you even eat it? The emergence of the “foodstagram” has provided a place for talented chefs, nutritionists and foodies to share photos or recipes. Following foodstagrams keeps me inspired with fresh new recipe ideas and up-to-date on the latest viral food trends, like rolled ice cream. Charlottesville’s restaurant scene has made Grounds the ideal place for aspiring foodstagrammers to congregate. It was difficult to narrow down my favorite student accounts, but this list provides a look at an array of approaches to college food blogging. Following these foodstagrams may or may not inspire you to try out a vegan recipe or two or give you honest reviews on new restaurants on the Corner. All, however, are guaranteed to make you hungry.

I love a good deal. When that deal involves food, nothing in the world can beat it. A dedication to the pursuit of free and discounted food is an integral part of the college student's creed. I have become obsessed with finding the best deals on food in Charlottesville lately. Whether that is comparing grocery store prices or ordering multiple sides instead of an entree at a restaurant, I’m on the hunt for the cheapest way to eat my way through second year.

This summer, tired of unsatisfying visits to dining halls, I decided to opt out of a meal plan altogether. I felt that I had enough cooking experience to take on feeding myself. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the vast variety of options for grocery shopping in Charlottesville. Some chains I was familiar with, but others I had never heard of. And what about the small local food stores in the area? After a few months of exploring and comparing grocery stores in the area, I have compiled this list of ratings on local stores.

Having only ever tasted cannolis from an amusement park cafeteria, I was excited to learn that Charlottesville gained an authentic cannoli bar earlier this month. Located just off 2nd Street near the IX Art Park, the cafe’s atmosphere is modern but eclectic and fits seamlessly with the other restaurants and dessert shops that line the business center where it’s located. The area is easily accessible by car, has ample parking, and if busing, is a short walk from stops at the Downtown Mall.

When I was six years old, my parents threw a huge dinner party at our house. I say huge because of the immense time and effort that went into preparing a spotless house, perfect meal and refined evening. I, of course, was not permitted to attend the exclusively adult event. Instead, I was sent to bed early. Like any curious child, I lied awake listening until guests arrived, then snuck down the hallway to peek at the gathering in all its glory. I remember standing and staring in wonder at the beautiful decorations, the candlelit dining room, the four course meal, the sparkling glasses filled with champagne and the slow jazz music playing in the background while dolled-up ladies chatted with men in suits. It was like that famous scene from “Titanic” was playing out in my house.

A sunny, Friday-morning breakfast jaunt last weekend brought me quite a ways off Grounds to try the highly recommended, Latin-American inspired coffeehouse and restaurant, La Taza. Like many other restaurants in the Belmont area, La Taza takes the expected and makes it unexpected. The restaurant can be found in the heart of historic Charlottesville, Belmont, where it pumps out coffee and Latin-American inspired cuisine. I was instructed to head there after complaining of having become bored with mainstream American brunch options.

Brunch season is finally upon us. Mother’s Day brunch, Easter brunch, even the University dining halls got the memo and hosted breakfast for dinner nights earlier in the semester. It’s easily the most popular meal of the day.

Pulling up to Mel’s Café, the first thing that popped into my head was “hole-in-the-wall.” The restaurant is situated halfway between the Corner and the Downtown Mall on Main Street. It has a diner vibe — a bright yellow interior and exterior and an “open” sign illuminating the front windows. I heard about Mel’s from both students and professors at the University, and they all recommended their fried chicken. Little did I know, a simple but delicious meal there would cure my hunger along with my homesickness.
