Indie pop duo CHERUB and Virginia-based rapper and singer D.R.A.M. amped up a lively Friday night crowd of students at the Amphitheater. CHERUB, the Nashville-based group made up of Jordan Kelley and Jason Huber, did not underwhelm as an opener, gyrating with at least one watermelon-painted guitar in a venue built in 1921 where students often study or even have class.

It’s largely agreed upon that pop music is primarily about fun, living in the moment, fleeting and intense moments of infatuation and, most of all, dancing. Artists must meet the de facto standards of successful pop — well-mastered, catchy beats and vocals that are just familiar and simple enough to be singable and repeatable and just unique enough to have the listener feel cool.

Scott Miller has a knack for writing songs that make listeners feel like they really know him, even if they haven’t heard of the man. The Staunton, Va. native has been writing lyrics for the love of it since he was fresh out of college, playing in Knoxville, Tenn. with his band, The V-Roys. Since then, he’s formed his own band, The Commonwealth, and still keeps up his family’s cattle farm. He’ll be opening for the Steel Wheels at The Jefferson Theater April 28, and The Cavalier Daily caught up with him before the show.
