When you think of Parisian delicacies, the crepe immediately comes to mind. The classic paper-thin pancake can be layered with endless options — from sweet, tangy strawberry jam to savory, melt-in-your-mouth ham and egg. Hungry yet? This iconic French cuisine is something for dessert lovers to enjoy, even here in Charlottesville. To satisfy all your crepe cravings, The Crêpe Society, currently located in the iLab at Darden, is coming to Centrals Grounds this coming August.

Charlottesville has plenty of pizzerias, but not all are the same. We each have our favorites for one reason or another — whether it’s the old man who works the counter, the crust that’s chewy just the way you like it or the fact that they deliver at 2 a.m. You could say each pizzeria has its own distinct personality — so if your favorite pizzeria was a person, who would they be?

Welcome to fall — the perfect time for familiarizing yourself with local wineries. Vineyard visits are a Charlottesville staple, whether you exclusively drink Two Buck Chuck or practically consider yourself a sommelier. And luckily for University students, we happen to live in one of the best wine regions in the country. Charlottesville’s 200-day growing season and generally fertile soil make it prime grape-growing real estate. It would be a shame to miss out — and let’s be honest, whatever work you have can and will get done later, so have yourself a day at a vineyard.

As the holiday season has gone on, there is one thing I’ve noticed — how much breakfast I’ve been eating. Is it just me or do breakfasts get A LOT bigger during the holidays? I’m not sure why this happens — whether it’s the colder weather or the overload of family time –– but breakfast becomes yet another opportunity to celebrate. From decadent cinnamon rolls to cheesy egg casseroles, this year’s holiday has really opened my eyes to the morning meal’s potential.

Ah, Thanksgiving. The one day a year when it is socially acceptable to consume a week’s worth of calories in one sitting. Some people — like me — thrive on Thanksgiving. But for others, Thanksgiving means crazy and awkwardly-forced family interactions.

Asado: The Wing & Taco Company has recently occupied the ever-changing storefront immediately to the right of Roots, replacing the former Café Caturra. In comparison to the more relaxed Café Caturra, Asado provides the lively, fun atmosphere and typical food that’s traditional of Corner evenings spent out with friends on a college budget.

The Milk Bar Birthday Cake is an icon — or at least that’s how my Instagram feed makes it seem. Pictures of the cake can be found all over social media, and its popularity is reflected by the crowds of people found in Milk Bar stores all over New York City and the fact that they just started shipping their bakes nationwide. If you’ve never heard of Milk Bar or even this cute little cake, then please, before reading any further, educate yourself and Google the heck out of this place. If — like me — your computer search history consists entirely of trendy foods, then you probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

I love going to the movies. Ever since I was a little kid, the movie theater was my family’s go-to rainy day activity. It’s like taking a step outside the world for a couple of hours — just you, your friends and a giant tub of popcorn.

So, you’ve graduated. That means no more late night College Inn cheesy bread deliveries, Take It Away sandwiches on the Lawn and Sunday pancake stacks at Villa. But do not despair! A whole wide world full of new food discoveries awaits — wherever your post-grad life may take you.

Tucked away in an unassuming stone-front house at 201 Avon Street is Barbie’s Burrito Barn. A neighborhood spot serving fresh, homemade Mexican food, Barbie’s is the perfect blend of quintessential and unique. When you first walk in, it feels like walking into someone’s home kitchen. To the left lies a cozy seating area, to the right, the fully-equipped kitchen. You are greeted by Barbie’s big mop of blonde hair and welcoming smile, as she buzzes around the kitchen and chats with customers.

Nestled in a tiny storefront just outside the Downtown Mall, The Flat is easy to miss. Best described as a ‘hole in the wall’ — yes, The Flat is literally a window in the side of a brick building — eating here is a refreshing change from your typical sit-down style restaurant.

The chocolate chip cookie. A staple of households across America. Whether homemade from grandma’s recipe or straight out of a Nestlé tub, we love them. Big, small, chewy, crunchy … no matter what combination we each have our own idea of the ideal cookie.
