College can be an incredibly stressful time for students — they have to develop time management skills in order to balance schoolwork, extracurriculars and social lives. That being said, it may be surprising to learn that so many students at the University are aspiring — even moderately successful — musicians.

WXTJ is inarguably the home of music in Charlottesville. Though not officially part of the University, the largely student-run radio station gives voices to over 100 students according to, Chase Browning, third-year College student and co-director of the station. WXTJ — found on 100.1 FM or accessed via online streaming — provides something that, structurally speaking, other radio stations simply cannot execute.

Ben Folds treated long-time fans at The Jefferson on April 15 with songs as relevant and poignant as ever. In many ways, the show had a hint of finality to it — Folds played everything from his oldest classics to his newest ballads, seemingly paying homage to his growth as an artist. The collection of songs, however, did not feel dated in any way. Each tune delivered the light, fresh-air feeling for which Folds and his piano are acclaimed.

Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac came equipped Saturday night to John Paul Jones Arena. The music great had her stage appropriately set, complete with giant screens projecting experimental graphics, chandeliers and other decorative light fixtures and accompanying light play following the music’s emotional tempo.

The University’s student radio station, WXTJ, hosted its annual art show March 18. The exhibition was held at the unofficial headquarters of the artistic subculture — Gordon Avenue’s “Trash House,” as it is known by members of WXTJ.

John Oliver resumed his role as host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” in its season four premiere last Sunday. The show fulfills a similar purpose as “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” — now hosted by Trevor Noah — where Oliver got his start. It lies at the intersection of news and entertainment, but the two never interfere with each other. The validity of the news presented is never sacrificed for humor’s sake.

After an eight-month hiatus, Elroy Love quietly published a new single this month. The release hints at a new artistic and emotional headspace for the three-piece. The song, aptly titled “Bleed on Me,” is still formed with Georgia clay and dried in the Tennessee sun like their first album “Glitch Cowboy,” but it feels decidedly more weighted.

Contrary to what their name suggests, Forth Wanderers haven’t strayed far from their starting place. The five-piece band out of New Jersey, led by vocalist Ava Trilling, has found their recipe — a mournful, yet strangely catchy guitar melody followed up by a slightly tweaked by-the-book drum beat, which serves as embroidery for the main appeal of Ava Trilling’s all-knowing and all-feeling voice. Forth Wanderers’ songs can at times run together into some sort of omni-track that cries every sad teenage ballad, but the band isn’t a one-trick pony. Instead, Ava Trilling is a master of subtlety.

Kicking off their fall U.S. tour, Real Estate took the stage last Thursday night to a decent crowd at the Jefferson Theater. The show was not outstanding in any manner — neither mind-expanding in greatness nor poor enough to warrant an early departure.

Athens, Ga., has a heavy-hitting lineup of bands to boast of from R.E.M. to the B-52’s. But one of the most unique bands is of Montreal, the glam-rock psychedelic brainchild of frontman Kevin Barnes.

Mothers managed to bring a sizable crowd into the Southern Café and Music Hall last Monday night. The show, originally scheduled for early February, was rescheduled due to a conflict. Despite much anticipation for the headlining act, the Philadelphia-based opening act Palm ended up dominating the stage.

Mac DeMarco’s last full-length release, “Another One”, debuted in August of 2015, but fans are beginning to get a bit antsy for the Canadian artist to put out another one of his eight-track recorded masterpieces. In response, Demarco has joked that his genitalia-enlargement surgery has kept him away from the recording studio, but along with the humorous explanation, Demarco decided to leak an old recording that’s been on his live set since 2012 when his album “2” released.

“Next Thing” feels like exactly that. It is a push in the same direction of Frankie Cosmos’s creator Greta Kline’s previous work — it even recycles some old songs — but the trouble is the April 1 release feels too much like a checklist of chores for Kline. The album’s newness comes entirely from its timestamp, and it’s decently satisfying for fans, but listeners will have a lingering sense of dissatisfaction from the band’s end. The voice gliding through the speakers has matured, and the formerly glossy and youthful narrator is a bit disillusioned, perhaps even bored, which makes for an uneventful listen.

Nashville has produced another gem that balances Southern charm in an East Coast outfit. Elroy Love calls Georgia home, but the bright lights of Nashville roped the trio in and led to their debut release, “Glitch Cowboy.”
