On Monday afternoon, around 50 recently-admitted prospective students gathered with their parents around a member of the University Guide Service as she prepared them for a Days on the Lawn tour. The group eagerly listened as the guide talked about the architectural history of the historic Lawn and the Academical Village, where eight months prior torch-carrying white nationalists had marched through the University's Grounds.

The Minority Rights Coalition announced Monday night in a Facebook post its newly-elected executive team for the 2018-19 term, chaired by second-year College student Ibtisaam Amin. Amin will be succeeding Evelyn Wang, a fourth-year Commerce student and outgoing MRC chair.

After 13 years of doing business next to the Cavalier Inn, Ken Beachley, owner of The Villa Diner, will be moving his business to a new location further up the road to 1250 Emmet Street, replacing Royal Indian Restaurant next to Zaxby’s.

University Dean of Admission Gregory Roberts issued an online statement last Friday affirming that U.Va. will not penalize applicants for school suspensions that resulted from protests responding to the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. or any other peaceful demonstration. Seventeen people were killed and 14 others were injured during the shooting.

After over four decades, the College is reevaluating its general education requirements by implementing a pilot curriculum to emphasize innovative, interdisciplinary learning. The program is comprised of three components — the Engagements, the Literacies and the Disciplines. Students are required to earn a certain number of credits in each of the three categories before they graduate.

President Teresa Sullivan announced Peter M. Grant II as chair of the Third Century Campaign Wednesday. The campaign aims to accumulate capital and resources to continue to expand upon the University’s success as it enters its third century of scholarship.

Last week, Take Back the Night held a weeklong series of events to raise awareness about the prevalence of sexual assault on Grounds. This is just one of the many organizations on Grounds who strive to provide support to survivors of sexual assault, and educate University students about the threat sexual assault poses to our community.

Student Council launched the reformed Service Scholar Program at an event in Newcomb Hall’s South Meeting Room Thursday evening. The event included a design-thinking workshop and presentation, followed by an informal question and answer session with members of the Community Service Committee.

The University released regular admissions decisions for the Class of 2021 on Wednesday. There were over 36,800 applicants — about 4,400 more applications than 2016 — and an overall acceptance rate of 27 percent, according to data from the University’s Office of Undergraduate Admission .

The Board of Visitors Committee on the College at Wise assembled in the board room of the Rotunda Thursday for an update on the Wise campus, which is located in southwestern Virginia. Over the past year, the liberal arts college has increased enrollment, implemented new programs and proposed initiatives to improve students’ quality of life.

The University has a long list of distinguished alumni, with James Quarles being one of the most recent additions. Quarles, who graduated from the University in 1997 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, currently serves as the Vice President of Business at the popular social media company, Instagram.

Rep. Tom Garrett (R-Va.) proposed a bill in Congress Monday that would rename Charlottesville’s federal courthouse after former University Law School Professor and late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. The building would officially be named the Justice Antonin G. Scalia Federal Building and United States Courthouse.

A group of students gathered in New Cabell Hall Wednesday night for a question and answer panel with the University Honor Committee. The event was planned and hosted by the Minority Rights Coalition preceding endorsements for Honor candidates this coming weekend.
