Last Thursday, three bands rocked a favorite local venue, the Jefferson Theater. Charlottesville’s own Kendall Street Company performed a stellar opening act followed by The Southern Belles, and Lord Nelson wrapped up the evening of rock, roll and brass with a performance that audience members would remember for days to come.

We’ve all borrowed things from time to time, but Lil Dicky takes it to a whole new level in his “$ave Dat Money” music video by borrowing, well, everything! The video opens with him walking from house to house asking homeowners if he can film a music video in their mansions. From there, Lil Dicky continues his borrowing spree by taking a yacht, nightclub stage, McLaren sports car, ice cream truck and even a T-Pain video shoot for his own purposes.

The Ante Room, a hole-in-the-wall venue in downtown Charlottesville, is easy to miss while driving along Main Street. The outside doesn’t attract attention, and the list of performers is not typically one the average music listener would recognize. Inside, however, lies a group of musicians dedicated to their craft, rocking out to sounds that could only leave the small audience asking how more people hadn’t discovered this establishment hidden in plain sight.

Dr. Dre released his third and final studio album, “Compton,” on Aug. 7, 16 years after his last album, “2001.” A compilation of everything that makes Dre, Dre, “Compton” is an ode to his hometown, reflects on his upbringing and features many of the rap artists he’s helped along the way.

With all of the auto-tuned and heavily edited studio beats present in modern music, it isn’t every day a band sounds better live than on iTunes. Louisville rock group My Morning Jacket however not only sound better live, they sound like an entirely different and improved group. The band came to the nTelos Wireless Pavilion on July 21 while on tour to promote their new album “The Waterfall.” The band captivated Charlottesville audiences, as each and every song they performed came with the type of energy and passion that could hypnotize anyone within earshot.

Those looking for the Snoop Dogg’s classic rap styles will be thoroughly disappointed in his newly released album “Bush.” While the artist retains his quirky lyrics and cannabis-focused themes, the vocals in each of the ten songs fully overpower the little remaining rapping. While Snoop has presented rap songs with many vocals in the past, none have featured them so prominently as those in “Bush.”
