SUMMING up my experiences and feelings about the University has proved difficult as I have reflected these past few weeks. In doing so, I continually am reminded of how lucky I am to have attended this school, and think about what a gift it has been to me. Completely unexpected, it came at just the right time and has been an honor that rivals no other in my life.

EXTRAORDINARY times call for extraordinary measures. In the weeks following the terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans have been living in a heightened state of security and anxiety. Even on college campuses across the country, students are faced with changes made in the interest of safety and security. Some of these differences, such as the new entry procedures for football games, are obvious. Others are less visible.

EVERYONE can agree that good times make for good friends. With this premise in mind, several leaders of fraternities and sororities around Grounds are organizing a philanthropy event followed by a four-way non-alcoholic mixer in hopes that all will have a good time.

A WEEK ago today, the United States was a different place. In the aftermath of the tragedies that occurred Sept. 11, our country still searches collectively for answers. Our instincts compel us to seek immediate understanding in order to deal with the pain. But we should not rush to judgment about failure to prevent the terrorist attack from occurring.

Although classes have been in session for less than two weeks, it has occurred in almost every class at the University: the blaring, distracting ring of someone's cell phone in the middle of a lecture or class discussion. The prevalence of cell phones has soared in the past few years, along with the rudeness of students. Students who choose to use cell phones should be responsible enough to think about how they effect others in the University community when doing so.

FOR UNANNOINTED first years, the first few weeks of college are full of adventure and discovery. Particularly with regard to social activities, college life poses many new and perhaps challenging situations to deal with. Take, for example, the ubiquitous "hook up."

WHETHER it's your first time moving in or your fourth, some things never change. Oppressive heat, carpet sales, U-Hauls and traffic jams quickly come to mind. Details such as these are reminders that although faces and fashions may drastically change over time, the experience of coming to college never does.

I CANNOT know whether any advice that I might humbly offer now is worth more than if I were fresh out of my first year. It was a year full of many lessons - probably more than any other point in my life. Of course, in the time since then, I have gained other insights and perspectives that are equally important.

INSTITUTIONAL memory can be a tricky thing. For the average student, it probably runs about five or six years at the most. But for administrators, it can span three or four decades. And at a place like the University, with its long history of student self-governance, this difference can have a significant impact on our University.

IN JUST over a month, stu-dents will walk down the Lawn for the last time, as graduates. And if your commencement is anything like mine in high school, I'm sure you heard the line about being "the future leaders of our country" as many times as you skipped class senior year.

FOR COLLEGE basketball fans, tonight is the night. In Minneapolis, the NCAA champions will earn their title after a long road to the finish. But for supporters of Cavalier hoops, this isn't reason to be sad. Instead, the University community has the opportunity to celebrate the exciting season our men's team just wrapped up.

OF ALL the catch phrases and jargon heard around Grounds, none is so pervasive as our sacred "community of trust." Since your first tour of the University, it's likely that some administrator has spoken of it as many times as casserole surprise has been doled out at Newcomb Hall. And for the most part, it works. Or maybe it does, if we just keep telling ourselves that it is alive and well. But is it?

IN A TOWN not more than 45 miles from where I was born and raised, President Bush recently announced his proposals to increase Education Department spending by 11.5 percent. The rural school in the small town of Townsend, Tennessee where he made his statement stands as an example of how far our nation's educational system still has to go. Bush will outline this plan further in an address before Congress tomorrow evening.

IT'S HARD to feel like a real student these days. There aren't many classes left to sign up for, there isn't much room for us at University Hall and we must always have a little plastic card to prove our status.

WITH VALENTINE'S Day just around the corner, I can imagine what's on most people's minds. Beat Duke! That's pretty close to what I'm thinking about. Hopefully, University Hall will be a spirited place on Wednesday night and the Cavaliers will put the Blue Devils in their place. But the 14th signals another struggle for victory equally worthy of consideration and attention.

PRIORITY seating. When I wrote about this issue early last semester, it was in reference to the academic arena. This time, the venue is changing, but the basic premise is not. Discussions concerning the improvement of University Hall have begun to take a serious turn in the wake of increased success on the basketball court. In response, Student Council President Joe Bilby and Engineering Rep. Patrick Kelly sponsored a bill late last semester to support several basic seating considerations for the student body.

ALTHOUGH many try, few universities legitimately can consider themselves "public Ivies." The University certainly is one of them, if not the original. Let's hope it stays that way.

IT'S IMPOSSIBLE to ignore these bells when you hear them ringing. Yes, the infamous sound of the Salvation Army bells can now be heard all over town. Indeed, the time of year when society collectively pauses to indulge in the so-called "spirit of giving" has come once again. At the University, it's hardly noticeable.

NIKE HAS Tiger Woods. McDonald's has Coke. U.Va. has Budweiser.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - A good way to describe the evening before this year's presidential election is all-out fighting in the final hours, with the candidates throwing their last punches into the ring before the polls finally opened.
