Beta Bridge never looks the same. On almost a daily basis, its appearance changes as University students partake in the decades-long tradition of painting birthday messages, congratulations or promotions for upcoming events on Rugby Road's bridge. When third-year College student Markeytta Harrison needs a break from the stress of class, she turns to the Black Expression Awareness & Thoughts Society. Harrison, who currently serves as the president of B.E.A.T.S, explained that the contracted independent organization provides an artistic outlet and forum for expression.

As students return to Charlottesville for the new school year, there are many reasons for celebration: reunions with friends, excitement for the upcoming year and a last "hoo-rah" before the end of summer. Throughout the years, students have found several different ways to celebrate these events at the University. Among the most popular perennial are the Wertland Block Party and the University Programs Council's welcome concert.

Spring has sprung on Grounds and the pavilion gardens surrounding the Lawn are blooming with green life again. Flowering dogwoods hang over the serpentine brick walls that enclose the manicured gardens full of tulips and daffodils, providing a quiet, shady recluse to study or take a quick nap on the freshly cut grass. For students and University visitors, the gardens contribute to the beauty as well as the history of Grounds.

The excitement students experience when course listings are released each semester often quickly fades to confusion and stress. After hours staring at pages of class names on Lou's List, many still have trouble nailing down their ideal schedule. Whether students are looking for something interesting or just a requirement filler that's on the easier side, their fellow classmates are always the best resource for suggestions.

A typical high school morning for fourth-year College student Erin Avery began like any average teenager's. Wake up at 8 a.m., get dressed, eat breakfast, start school. The difference, however, was that Avery's classroom was the same as her home. She began home-schooling at age 7, a choice her parents made to have greater voice in their daughter's education.

From the top of the Astronomical Tower, the city of Prague sprawled out before us. Weaving streets lined with red rooftops radiated from Old Town Square below, where tiny dots of people scurried back and forth across gray cobbled stones. In the distance, the Vltava River shimmered in the sun, halved by a black stripe, the Charles Bridge. A few hundred feet below, Prague lived and breathed, but up here, we were suspended in time above the historic city.

In her spare time, third-year College student Kathleen Baines sorts invoices, serials and processes books in Alderman Library's Acquisitions Department. Why? On the way home from its Winter Break training program near Daytona Beach, Fla., the University women's crew team made an extra stop to the Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville. There, the squad visited Katie Carr, a 13-year-old rower diagnosed with cancer.

It is that time of year again - time for turkey dinners, vats of mashed potatoes and slices of pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving is one of the few truly American traditions, celebrating the friendship between early Pilgrim settlers and Native Americans with an annual feast of stuffing and green bean casserole. But a few years ago, my family decided to break away from the norm and try something different for Thanksgiving: Chinese food.

Early in the summer of 2008, a young boy went missing in the woods near Madison County. First to respond to the crisis was the Blue Ridge Mountain Rescue Group - a member of the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference and one of the University's many student organizations.
