There’s a great irony surrounding my time covering Virginia sports. I joined the Cavalier Daily sports section because sports were — and always will be — my comfort zone. It was supposed to be a place where, in the midst of all the changes and challenges that come with college, I would feel right at home. I had no idea that the exact opposite would happen, but in the best way. This role and this community of incredibly talented and passionate individuals who gave me a platform to do what I love has truly pushed me to find new passions, skills and perspectives that I am hard pressed to imagine I would have found anywhere else.

As the final whistle blew on a 10-0 defeat, the full-capacity crowd at Scott Stadium dispersed and only pockets of maroon and orange-covered Hokie fans remained celebrating in Charlottesville. That November 2017 evening, Micah Kiser should have been distraught with having ended his legendary career at Virginia without ever beating in-state rival Virginia Tech.

Virginia failed to advance to the ACC Tournament championship match Wednesday night following a game-winning penalty kick goal by Clemson junior midfielder Luis Fernandez-Salvador in the 87th minute. Virginia men’s basketball has been unique within the landscape of dominant college basketball programs in the past decade. The Cavaliers are contrarians in their playing style — which favors defensive intensity and a slow pace — and in their lack of reliance on superstardom to fuel their success. Thus, as the world of college basketball prepares for a dramatic shake-up following the resurgence of prep-to-pro recruits — players who jump directly from high school to professional basketball — Virginia finds itself positioned better than the rest of its competition.

After conceding a goal in the back end of the first half, Virginia’s offense couldn’t find the net in the latest iteration of the Commonwealth Clash. The Cavaliers (2-3-1, 2-3-1 ACC) suffered their first loss to Virginia Tech (3-1-2, 3-1-2 ACC) in 15 years to close out their regular season and will look ahead to the start of the ACC Tournament. Virginia is set to be the No. 4 seed in the tournament and will look to conjure a repeat of last year’s postseason success.

Virginia suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season following a 2-1 defeat against Notre Dame Saturday at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Despite being the aggressor in the first half and entering halftime with a goal under their belt, the Cavaliers (1-2-1, 1-2-1 ACC) failed to keep the Fighting Irish (3-2-0, 2-1-0 ACC) from extending the match into overtime and capitalizing on a golden goal in the second period of extra minutes.

No. 5 Virginia men’s soccer drew Virginia Tech 1-1 in Blacksburg, Va. in a game that went to double overtime. Jocelyn Willoughby, former women’s basketball guard and team captain, was drafted Friday in the first round of the 2020 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury. Led by former quarterback Bryce Perkins, 2019 was a defining year for Virginia football. The season’s accomplishments included snapping a 15-year losing streak to in-state rival Virginia Tech, winning the ACC Coastal Division for the first time and playing in a New Year’s Six bowl. However, with Perkins — one of the most impactful players the team has seen this decade — leaving the program, the burden of leading the 2020 Cavaliers will fall on his successor, sophomore quarterback Brennan Armstrong.

The 2019-20 men’s basketball season was the most unpredictable, chaotic and, ultimately, shortest season that the sport has ever seen. However, despite the obstacles, this season proved to be Coach Tony Bennett’s most impressive performance at the helm of the Cavaliers.

Virginia enters the last week of the regular season after losing 47-62 to Duke and winning 86-76 against Virginia Tech. The Cavaliers (12-15, 7-9 ACC) struggled to score against Duke (16-10, 10-5 ACC) in a slow, back-and-forth game in which Duke’s defense prevented Virginia from generating any offensive rhythm. Virginia quickly turned around a few days later and had one of its highest-scoring games against Virginia Tech (20-7, 10-6 ACC) in a shocking upset win.

As a swarm of orange Clemson jerseys hastily scramble to set up on defense, there’s a panicking look that overcomes them, as senior guard Jocelyn Willoughby slowly brings the ball up the court. Virginia dropped one of its first games of 2020 Thursday night, falling to Wake Forest 62-56 in Winston-Salem. The Cavaliers’ (7-10, 2-4 ACC) poor shooting on three pointers and free throws allowed the Demon Deacons (11-6, 4-2 ACC) to hold off Virginia in a game that went down to the wire.
