Five people were arrested on alcohol-related charges this year during the 40th annual Foxfield Races, which took place April 29, in addition to one person being ticketed for possession of marijuana. Two out of the five individuals arrested were University students.

The University’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team held tabling events over the past several days where students had the opportunity to sign the “Savvy Fox Pledge,” which promotes safety practices for the Foxfield Races to be held Saturday. Those who signed were given free t-shirts.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was announced Friday as the Class of 2017 Valediction speaker for final exercises on May 19. Deborah McDowell, literary studies professor and director of the Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies, will address graduates of the College on May 20, and Robert Pianta, dean of the Curry School, will address the rest of the graduates on May 21.

Charlottesville Commonwealth’s Attorney candidate Jeff Fogel has made marijuana legislation a prominent issue in his 2017 campaign for office, and said he would not prosecute small possession charges of marijuana at the Jefferson Area chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws Feb. 9.
