Various organizations on Grounds will host Homecomings events this week for current students and a crop of alumni expected to return to Grounds. These events, which will include cookouts, receptions and tailgates, are open to students within the University community as well as to the public.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe proposed a new plan to expand health care coverage to more than 25,000 Virginians this Monday, putting forth a more modest proposal than previously presented by the Affordable Care Act. Though many Democrats have said they believe McAuliffe will be able to carry out the plan using executive powers alone, Republicans have said the Republican-controlled legislature should and must be involved.

Boise State University Anthropology Prof. John Ziker recently released parts of his study examining university faculty’s use of time during the day at the university. Results so far indicate faculty members actually work much longer than 40-hour work weeks and much of their time is spent in ways other than research or teaching.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe exercised his right to veto a state bill for the first time Wednesday on House Bill 962. The bill would have clarified existing legislation about guns stored in motor vehicles when the owner does not have a concealed weapons permit. It stipulated that the guns must be in “secured” containers, such as glove compartments or consoles, but not necessarily locked containers. McAuliffe’s objection to the bill was that not requiring the containers be locked presented a public safety risk.

Results from the University Board of Elections University-wide election last week saw a 25 percent voter turnout overall — a stark decline from last year’s 40.54 percent. Last year’s vote was an 8 percent increase from the general election held in 2012, with momentum largely coming from heated debate about the Honor Committee’s proposed Restore the Ideal Act.

Last year’s student body elections, which culminated in the passing of an amendment to the Honor Committee’s constitution, saw a turnout rate of 40.54 percent, an increase of 8 percent from the year before. The University Board of Elections will show how this year’s election turnout holds up in comparison when it announces results Friday.
