LAST TUESDAY marked a milestone for Iraqi democracy with an official announcement that the nation's constitution had been adopted by a fair majority. On the same day, the media carried a far more grim alert, as the U.S. military death toll reached 2,000. While this may not be news to the well-informed University student, it is important to note that the overwhelming majority of the brave men and women serving and dying in Iraq are not much older than you and I. According to figures from the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, which gathers the bulk of its data from the U.S. government, almost 70 percent of U.S. casualties in Iraq have been under the age of 30.

The women's tennis team served up an explosive 6-1 victory at the Snyder Center yesterday afternoon, upsetting No. 22 Oregon and extending their winning streak to four matches. The No. 37 Cavaliers improved their record to 11-4 in the fourth match of a six-match homestand.

In the first seven games of a 15-game homestand, the Virginia softball team demonstrated both the depth and youth of this season's roster. The Cavaliers defeated Bowling Green State University, 1-0, in Thursday's home opener and went 4-2 in this weekend's Cavalier Classic Invitational Tournament. Virginia finished second behind undefeated Seton Hall and improved their season record to 15-13.

Emotions ran high at the Aquatic and Fitness Center this weekend, as the nationally ranked Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated Maryland's squads in the Cavaliers' final dual meet of the season. The 9th ranked men (8-1, 5-0 ACC) touched the wall first in all but one event, recording a score of 186-57 over unranked Maryland (4-7, 1-5). The 13th-ranked women (7-1, 4-1) brought home 10 out of 13 events, for a final score of Virginia 151, No. 15 Maryland, 92. Saturday's events marked the last competition time in the AFC pool for 13 graduating Cavaliers.

After a disappointing October in which the Virginia women's volleyball team won only one out of 10 matches, the Cavaliers hope that November will be their month. The squad (7-20, 1-10 ACC) will face two conference rivals this weekend, Wake Forest at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Florida State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, both in U-Hall.
