This year, the Virginia Film Festival got a taste of raw suburban life with the film “Skook,” directed by 24-year-old Connor Hurley. “Skook” is Hurley’s first official feature film, proving to be quite the success after winning Best Narrative Feature at the New Orleans Film Festival. Hurley began filming “Skook” at 21-years-old, and the majority of the film was shot within his five-week winter break from school.

Since 1974, the Heritage Theatre Festival — a professional summer stock theater affiliated with the University of Virginia — has lit up the Ruth Caplin Theatre stage. The season usually consists of about five separate productions played out across the summer. Last year, the festival produced Broadway hit “Next to Normal” as well as the classic “Annie Get Your Gun.”

The funky fresh electro-pop duo Cherub performed live at The Jefferson April 8 — introduced by opening act Carousel. Both performers used smooth beats to turn the theater into more of a dance party than a concert.

The University Dance Program and drama department held their annual Spring Dance Concert Thursday. The program consisted of 12 dances, choreographed in large part by University students themselves. This year’s guest choreographers were Kristin Clotfelter and Katie Faulkner.

Television loves bringing the dead back to life — and I am not just referring to the acclaimed “The Walking Dead.” With a new take on the supernatural — this time zombie-free — ABC’s new show “Resurrection,” based on the novel “The Returned” by Jason Mott, stars Hollywood veterans Frances Fisher, Kurtwood Smith, Matt Craven and former “House” star Omar Epps.
