In the European restaurant world, the local brasseries of small towns and sprawling cities alike are known for good food, lively and casual atmospheres, plenty of drinks and a connection to the community. Brasseries can be a good place to see familiar faces or to try something new, but always feel representative of their neighborhood through the food and atmosphere. At Brasserie Saison, Charlottesville’s own European fusion brasserie, these traditions are followed truly, but with an upscale twist that elevates the cooking and modernizes the feel.

Only rarely does someone eat something truly special. I love a good meal, but in the restaurant world, sometimes the presence of the good can mask the existence of the extraordinary. However, every once in a while, hidden in unlikely places, you come across something exceptional — a meal that sticks in your mind. Every so often you eat at a place that while you’re still at the table, you can’t wait for your next opportunity to do it all over again. A few days ago, I had that experience in an unassuming little chicken joint called Al Carbon.

The word “bebedero” is tough to define. In most parts of the Spanish-speaking world, it is either the word for a drinking bowl or a water fountain. Other translations amount to, “the watering hole.” But in the Andes region of South America, a bebedero is an establishment that sells alcoholic drinks, otherwise known as a bar. It’s a word in business conversation, evoking class and sharpness — as expected with a word this fancy. However, Charlottesville’s namesake bar and restaurant, The Bebedero on the Downtown Mall, is not just a business bar — it’s a warm, authentic and friendly bebedero that brings authentic cuisine to the people of Cville.

Charlottesville’s beer scene is almost as well-known as its food, and because of it, the beer garden concept is a growing phenomenon in town. With a beer garden comes the influence of the alpine region — the world capital of beer.

Breakfast, as we know, is the most important meal of the day. A healthy breakfast can be the start to a productive day, a balanced diet and an overall healthy lifestyle. We all try to be a little healthier early in the morning — some of us may even eat a piece of fruit to start off the day. However, healthy can get a bit boring. Sometimes it’s good to be bad, even before noon. Sometimes we need to swap the whole wheat toast and egg whites for something a little sinful but 10 times as tasty. And if you ever feel the need to break out of that new health kick you just kicked off and start your day with a little indulgence, look no further than Ace Biscuit and Barbecue.

If there’s something Charlottesville citizens know plenty about, it’s burgers. Whether a diner burger on the Corner or a chic sandwich on the Downtown Mall, burgers are just about everywhere in our city. So when it comes to burger innovations, one might be hard-pressed to find something different. That is, if it weren’t for Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint.

A walk on the Downtown Mall can put on display just how expansive Charlottesville’s food scene really is. Among the brick pathways are dozens of restaurants competing for your patronage. Neon signs, grand entryways, smiling hosts and hostesses — these restaurants hope to draw you in off the street and into their often-bustling interiors. But what if there was a restaurant that intentionally hid itself away — a high-end, exclusive eatery where you have to know someone just to get a table and the only way to enter is to know the secret code?

Dumpling choice has been the topic of long and heated debate among students at the University in recent years. The dumpling war has brought two titans of the dumpling industry into direct competition — Got Dumplings and Marco and Luca. With Got Dumplings recently opening their own brick-and-mortar location, it seems the fight has been brought to a showdown on the Corner. The standoff has left many wondering who reigns supreme in the world of tasty fried dough.

Thanks to its always-growing restaurant and bar scene, Charlottesville has established itself as a known foodie city. However, its status may not be entirely coincidental. The City of Charlottesville lies on the 38th Parallel, a latitude line that runs through us as well as some of the food capitals of the world — Spain, Italy, Greece, Lebanon, Turkey and the Napa Valley to name a few. The 38th Parallel is a mild, temperate region across the globe that lends itself to the cultivation of fine food and wine. Some might say that Charlottesville’s connection to the line has contributed to the city’s food prowess. And in 2013, experienced sommelier and restaurateur Justin Ross decided to turn that idea into a restaurant of its own.

Across the city of Charlottesville, restaurants are constantly pushing for innovation. Phrases like “a modern twist” or “a brand new take on…” can be seen all too often at many top restaurants, written in sleek fonts on menus or displayed in slender type online. While enjoying the cutting edge of the city’s inventive cuisine is always a pleasure, there’s nothing quite like returning to a classic, made-from-scratch restaurant. And when it comes to Italian eating in particular, it’s difficult to think of a restaurant more deserving of the title of a ‘classic’ than Tavola.

Common experiences among all college students are few, but one of them is certainly a visit from the parents. Some students miss their parents deeply and can’t wait to spend time away from classes and with family. Others are mostly in it for the trip to Bed Bath and Beyond or a free grocery outing. Regardless, everyone can agree a visit brings one good thing to the table — a dinner that doesn’t include dining halls or frozen meals.
