Baseball
In what has been a season of inconsistency, the Virginia team couldn’t right the ship in its last ACC dual of the season against Pittsburgh Friday night, coming up empty on wins in conference play.
The Virginia baseball team will open uts season this weekend at the University of Central Florida Tournament in Orlando, Fla. The Cavaliers will play three games over the course of the weekend — against UCF, Samford and Rice.
Virginia men’s lacrosse begins play Saturday at Klöckner Stadium, as the Cavaliers seek to continue the revival of a once nationally renowned lacrosse program that has since slipped into mediocrity.
It has been widely mentioned this year in men’s college basketball that no true dominant teams exist. A lack of blue blood dominance has left many solid teams in the race to jockey for the national spotlight as they vie for a good seeding come the NCAA Tournament.
Wrestling
Jake Blank, Sports Editor: Kyle Guy. The sophomore guard leads the team in both minutes played and points scored. Guy has become the face of the team and its most dynamic offensive player. Additionally, he showed maturity well beyond his age against Duke, calmly closing out the game in front of a national audience, earning him the Pillar Player of the Game.
At the 2018 National Rugby Summit, Virginia women’s rugby Coach Nancy Kechner received USA Rugby’s Female College Coach of the Year award. Each year, this award honors a female coach who “continually demonstrates dedication to empowering female rugby athletes and the advancement of female involvement in the game of rugby.”
Softball
May 23, 2017 was a rainy day in Athens, Ga. The NCAA National Championship match, between the No. 2 Virginia men’s tennis team and No. 9 North Carolina, was pushed back for the second-consecutive day. Relegated inside to the four inside courts of the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, the championship match progressed more slowly than most do, which only amplified the excruciating pressure on the players.
The last time the Virginia women’s basketball team faced off against Maryland was in the 2013-14 season, upsetting them 86-72 in what was one of Virginia’s biggest wins that season. At the time, Maryland was ranked No. 6 and had their sights set on a national championship. Little did they know, Virginia showed up to play and made sure they would not be overlooked.
No. 8 Virginia hosted Fordham on a chilly Sunday evening at Klöckner Stadium for the second-round of the NCAA Tournament. The matchup makes the first meeting between the schools in the history of their programs and the Rams (13-5-2, 5-2-1 Atlantic 10) made the most of it, scoring in the 83rd minute to end the Cavaliers’ tournament with a 1-0 defeat.

The Virginia triathlon team recently wrapped up a successful fall season and is now in training mode as they look to future races.
The No. 4 Virginia field hockey team (15-3, 5-1 ACC) achieved a close 4-2 victory against the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (8-9, 5-2 Big East) Sunday afternoon. This game helped the Cavaliers finish off their regular season with one of the best records in the program’s recent history and an ACC regular season title.
Throughout her life, Carla Williams has always been preparing for the next step — the bigger step. The former collegiate basketball star has sought to stand out — even when growing up in LaGrange, Ga. — playing football and basketball with the boys in her local recreational center.
In its final regular season game in Charlottesville, the No. 10 Virginia men’s soccer team honored its six seniors — goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell, defender Nate Odusote, midfielder Hayes Fountain, midfielder Pablo Aguilar, defender Bay Kurtz and defender Sheldon Sullivan.
No. 10 Virginia hosted one of the Big South leading schools, Radford, in their second to last regular season home game of the season. The Cavaliers (9-2-3, 2-1-3 ACC) could not take care of business against the in-state opponent and were defeated 1-0.
The Virginia Cavaliers lost a close game Tuesday evening against a tough Maryland team in a game that seemed to be a blowout until the final few minutes.
