On what would have otherwise been a normal Saturday morning practice at the Aquatic & Fitness Center March 1, the Virginia divers gathered in the pool deck classroom for an impromptu meeting with Coach Todd DeSorbo. The divers were notified of the meeting — but not its contents — just hours before it occurred, by former interim diving coach Jack Gigliotti.

Virginia field hockey has more than proven its mettle this season, besting eight ranked teams — four of which were shutouts — prior to Friday’s match against No. 6 Wake Forest. Yet the Cavaliers (14-1, 7-1 ACC) somehow reached new heights with an incredible 5-3 victory over the Demon Deacons (15-3, 7-1 ACC), overcoming increasingly poor sportsmanship from their opponent to win not only the match but also the title of ACC Regular Season Co-Champions.

With the end of the regular season on the horizon, No. 3 Virginia field hockey appeared ready to ramp up its play for the postseason, dismantling William & Mary in a 5-0 shutout win in Williamsburg, Va. Sunday. Against an outmatched opponent, the Cavaliers (11-1, 5-1, ACC) worked to address some of their more noticeable flaws, specifically their inability to consistently generate clean offense and convert when given solid chances.

For players on the Virginia men’s tennis team, the ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg offered a second opportunity to earn bids to the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships in November. Held Saturday to Monday at Virginia Tech’s Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center, the tournament featured top collegiate players from across the region vying for NCAA qualification.

Dynasties are a quintessential part of college sports. When it comes to NCAA field hockey, “dynasty” is the only word for North Carolina, whose dominance under former coach Karen Shelton yielded 10 national championships and 25 ACC championships. From 1999 to 2023, the Tar Heels only lost to Virginia seven times in the regular season.
