I remember waking up to an email from Housing and Residence Life in early July. I had been assigned to Courtenay House — colloquially known as one of the “motels” — for my first-year housing assignment. When I mentioned it to some of my upperclassmen friends, they laughed and told me it might be rough, but that I would survive. On move-in day, my family arrived to find it a little dusty — or so we thought. By late September, my roommate and I would come to learn that the “dust” — in our cabinets, closets, drawers and on our AC unit — was actually mold. We were not the only students on Grounds to make this unsettling discovery.

Resident advisors serve as the first line of support for students living in on-Grounds housing — RAs are expected to act as a peer advisor for their residents, while also serving as residents’ first point of contact in many emergency situations. The seriousness of the issues they face, coupled with the nature of living in the same place in which they work, means that some RAs feel overwhelmed and have sought additional institutional measures for support.

When do the issues that are solely considered mental health problems reveal larger, institutional problems at play? Some may argue that if everyone needs a therapist, larger social problems are accountable — not just mental health problems themselves.

Fourth-year College student Emma Camp posted a sign on her Lawn room door Friday — Constitution Day — in protest of the University’s newly implemented policy which restricts the size of signs allowed on Lawn room doors. The sign contained the full text of the First Amendment and takes up almost the entirety of the door — far larger than the size of the two message boards the current policy restricts signage to.

Last semester, a sign saying “F—k UVA”, among other things, appeared on the door of a Lawn room, igniting a wave of controversy. Now, the same Lawn resident has once again spurred debate on Grounds following her display of another sign which notably featured the Rotunda engulfed in flames and draped in a Klansmen’s hood followed by a Kwame Ture quote. While the University administration defended the student’s right to post such material in the fall, the spring semester has witnessed a disappointing departure from this earlier stance. Even before the student posted her most recent sign March 12, Housing and Residence Life unveiled a new set of regulations on Lawn room postings that will take effect the next academic year. This was followed by the University physically removing the questionable sign the same day it was posted under the pretense that it “directly promot[ed] physical violence.” Both these actions are insulting to the University community and reveal that the administration has all but a shallow commitment to upholding the First Amendment rights of students.
