For my first ever article with The Cavalier Daily, I covered the 94th Academy Awards. I had never written anything outside of essays for school before, and I was eager to get my name on the website. At the time, the awards show had arguably not produced a buzz-generating moment since the 2017 Best Picture slip-up, and it was looking like that year’s show would be uneventful like the previous few. I figured the ceremony, which had lost some of its past intrigue and luster, would offer an easy and manageable introduction to event coverage so that I could soon move on to loftier pieces.

The University is tightening its belt. The University sent an email to all its employees March 25, including student employees, describing its new budgeting rules for the foreseeable future. Citing fiscal uncertainty caused by changing economic conditions and federal policies regarding universities, all staff hiring is now under a review process, which is effectively a freeze. Off-cycle promotions are halted. The University is now “committed to merit-based salary increases and bonuses.” While the University was quick to reassure recipients that they remain committed to maintaining a high quality of scholarship, the email sent to University employees seemed like an indication of a substantial cut in the future.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, spoke in the Rotunda Monday on the role and challenges of Congress in American democracy in an event hosted by the Karsh Institute of Democracy. Cornyn spoke about President Donald Trump and his administration’s policies, saying that the president dominates today’s political discourse and is overshadowing the actions of Congress.

After the Nov. 13, 2022 on-Grounds shooting left three students dead and two others injured, an investigation and ensuing external review into University threat assessment procedures was commissioned by the University to understand how the shooting could have happened and how to prevent another like it from happening in the future.

There’s an old New York Times column that I re-read every once in a while. It’s all about the ways in which we reveal ourselves to others, and how that vulnerability creates room for the kind of relationships that aren’t dependent on perfection, but on acceptance. As this lede suggests, I am quite fond of this piece, but the final sentence is my favorite part — “If we want the rewards of being loved, we have to submit to the mortifying ordeal of being known.” This line was one of the first things that came to mind as I thought about how to put my time at The Cavalier Daily, easily one of the most formative periods of my life, into words.

Coming into the University, the steps I had to take to feel successful as a pre-commerce major seemed to be laid out for me already. I quickly realized that there was a conventional path that everyone followed. People told me I needed to join X or Y club to improve my chances of getting accepted into my major. As such, I joined a few popular business organizations and began to craft the “ideal” resume.

My mom took a video of me getting into U.Va. It’s shot at a distance. Acceptances released Dec. 10. Two days prior, I began a 10-day stay in my basement, quarantining from a COVID-19 exposure. The Boston cold seeped into every inch of that cellar, but it failed to dampen my excitement — as the video attests.

With spring having officially started, it’s only proper to give the season its earned praise and “extra hour” in the spotlight. From posies and pollinators to dandelions and daylight, spring has a lot to brag about. Offering just enough temperature variability for you to hold off on hard launching your shorts attire, spring is a time of rejuvenation, which I'm sure we all definitely need, even after our recent break. But for as much as I love these aspects, I’m here to share the “best” things about the spring, focusing on those lovely qualities that drive most of us mad about the season.

Virginia was fighting to keep its season alive against California March 6. The Cavaliers trailed 24-13 after the first quarter and needed a heroic comeback. That slim hope however, was quickly quelled when one of Virginia’s stars, senior forward Latasha Lattimore, collapsed on the floor and was helped off the court.

From Broadway musicals to Shakespearean tragedies, the theater community at the University is a thriving one, with organizations for any and all who care to get involved. This year, many of the student directors — in both theater-focused Contracted Independent Organizations and drama department productions — are women. And these directors are using their roles to reshape the way that gender roles and norms are depicted in their plays.

And in 2022, she added another as a professor, bringing her talents and experience to University classrooms.
