After a hard fought victory against VCU Friday, the Virginia men’s basketball team returned home to take on Monmouth in the season’s second game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. The Cavaliers (4-0, 0-0 ACC) played another sound game on both ends as they cruised to a 73-53 win.

Despite the momentum-crushing setback, the Cavaliers (5-2, 2-1 ACC) have another golden opportunity to return to the postseason when they travel to play Pittsburgh this weekend.

In less than a month, the Virginia men’s basketball team will take the court at John Paul Jones Arena against UNC Greensboro for its first game of the season. As with every year, Coach Tony Bennett must replace the contributions of some key players — but this season, no one expected him to have to do this much. The transfers of guards Marial Shayok, Darius Thompson and forward Jarred Reuter last season, along with the dismissal of forward Austin Nichols, leaves Bennett with some roles he may not have thought he would have to fill at the start of last season.

Prior to Saturday, wins were coming relatively easily for the Virginia football team — the Cavaliers largely dominated in their first three victories, all by double digits. This Saturday, a hard-nosed Duke team challenged Virginia to grind out a win for the first time this season. Though it did not come easy, the Cavaliers (4-1, 1-0 ACC) took down the Blue Devils (4-2, 1-2 ACC) in a 28-21 defensive slugfest on Bicentennial weekend.

As the University celebrates its Bicentennial Launch this weekend, students and alumni have more than their school’s rich history to be excited about — their football team is off to its best start in years. Virginia comes out of its bye week with great momentum after a road rout of Boise State, and the prospect of bowl eligibility looms large. The Cavaliers (3-1, 0-0 ACC) will look to ignite what will be a raucous home crowd at Scott Stadium when they take on Duke in their ACC opener.

It has already been a long road towards revitalizing the Virginia football program for Coach Bronco Mendenhall — struggles last year were plenty and wins were few. This year, however, Mendenhall seems to have his team on the right track. The Cavaliers have had their best start since the 2014 season at 2-1, and have already matched their win total from last season. Virginia travels west this week for its toughest test thus far in 2017 — a Friday night road showdown against Boise State (2-1, 1-0 MWC).

After opening the season with an inspiring win against William & Mary, the Virginia football team gave a lackluster performance in all phases of the game over the weekend as they were defeated 34-17 by Indiana. The Cavaliers (1-1) started the game strong, but their special teams blunders and an anemic offensive performance allowed the Hoosiers (1-1) to come away with a win.

For the first time since 2013, the Virginia football team opened its season with a win, taking down FCS foe William & Mary, 28-10. The Cavaliers controlled the game from beginning to end, showing solid improvement from last year’s opening loss to Richmond.

With training camp in full swing and the season quickly approaching, the Virginia football team has been grinding hard to show growth in its second year under Coach Bronco Mendenhall. The silver lining of the Cavaliers’ disappointing 2-10 record last season is that there is immense room for improvement, and with many returning faces under Mendenhall’s system, there is some optimism.

Around this time last year, it was a widely accepted consensus among Virginia football fans that a change was finally coming to their beloved program. Coach Mike London was out after several dismal years, and in came Bronco Mendenhall from Brigham Young University — a decorated college football mind with a reputation for success. “Hoos Rising” became the mantra for his his new culture at Virginia, and the school was excited to see its struggling football team finally right the ship.

Two of Virginia’s top junior players of the past few seasons were selected within the top 10 picks of the MLB Draft Monday. First basemen and outfielder Pavin Smith was selected No. 7 overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks, with first baseman and pitcher Adam Haseley the very next pick by the Philadelphia Phillies at No. 8.
